Breastfeeding after periods return 8m PP

I am almost 8 months PP and have just started my first period back (sad). I have exclusively breastfed my baby and we have obviously started weaning but are only on lunch at the moment. She still feeds quite a lot and 2-3 times overnight.

Has anyone else’s periods returning at this stage had a negative impact on their breastfeeding or milk supply? I have googled and it says that it can at certain points in the cycle etc and hormones may cause the baby to reject the milk at certain points but would like some views from others who have actually experienced it. I love breastfeeding and would hate for this to be the end but want to be prepared if it is 🙁

I fed mine for about three years each, first one was still feeding when I got pregnant. That was the only time they turned their nose up and we just ended it.

Thanks for your comment - I’ve seen a few people say that happened when they fell pregnant! I have no plans to fall pregnant any time soon so hopefully should be fine. She didn’t seem to mind anything leading up to this cycle.

I breastfed for 16 months and my period came back around month 5/6 when my baby had one random week that they slept through! I never noticed a difference in feeding during my period, however, I don’t really get any breast changes due to hormones, they didn’t even grow when I was pregnant much to my dismay! Not sure if it’s connected.

It took me around 15 months before I got my periods back…but then we carried on until DC was just turned 3. He’s 3.5 now and I’m pregnant which is probably the only reason we stopped but he still asks for ‘boobies’. Not sure how he’ll react when baby comes along!

My supply dips a bit just before I'm due on, like a day or 2 before, then business as usual when I'm on. I only notice because my nursling gets frustrated and a bit fussy!

Nursing 1 BF until practically 3 (which included pregnancy 2 and tandem feeding for 6m). Period returned at 10m.
Nursling 2 still BF at almost 2. Period returned at 9m.

No it shouldn't make a difference at all. My periods returned at 9 months PP. Still BF my eighteen month old regularly.

No changes for me

My periods came back when my son was 10 months old and he didn’t seem to notice. He is 20 months old now and still breastfeeding 2-3 times a day with no issues.

Sprogonthetyne · 11/02/2025 14:17

It was never an issue for either of my children. I fed one until 20m and the other until 2.5 years, so well over a year of feeding after period returned.

EBF both of mine and annoyingly my periods came back at 4 and 3 months respectively. With my first, I did notice that he seemed less interested when I was on my period but no issues like that at all with my second.

Just to add I fed my first until he was 28 months and my second is still feeding at 15 months.

Thanks so much ladies ☺️ I was planning on nursing for a fair bit longer so glad to hear it should be ok!
