Exclusive breastfeeding, but having 'light' bleeding

I'm exclusively breastfeeding my 14 week old baby, but today and yesterday have had some blood in v. discharge (like fertile mucus, but with blood in - apologies if too much info, but this is my first baby)...
Any thoughts appreciated, but I thought I wouldn't be having any periods or period like things while exclusively breastfeeding.

Gillian.

I exclusively bf both my boys but bled exactly 4 weeks to the day after each birth. Not bleeding while bf is a myth.

I got my periods back 4 weeks after dd born as well, despite bf, and they were as regular as clockwork, so it's entirely possible (but unfair!)

It varies enormously. I didn't have proper periods until at least a year afterwards. But others (like Lyra) return almost immediately.

One thing I did find was that although my periods didn't return properly I definately had cyclical changes, in that there were times when discharge would be really different, slightly redder(browner)/thicker etc. I think you're completely normal. It may not be a full period but its alwaays a good plan to use contraception just in case

periods from 4-6 weeks here, and every 4 weeks thereafter, fully BF till 6 months

LyraSilvertongue · 02/05/2008 23:17

I did feel a bit cheated tbh. Exclusively bf for 3 months with DS1 (then mixed fed) but bf DS2 exclusively longer. Periods back within 4 weeks both times.

Thanks great for all of the answers, I had figured it was, but just wanted the benefit of someone else's experience! No fears about the contraception - on the rare occasions when we have the time/energy/privacy/desire for anything of that nature we've been very safe - I'm looking for at least a two year gap!! I did have a little bit last month, but thought nothing of it as it was very very slight, but now he sleeps longer at nights (usually midnight-ish to 6am ish) this may be making things a bit different.
I do have to say what a huge fan of bfing I am though - it is just amazing and soooo convenient (especially for night feeds!).

Cheers,

Gillian.

mine still not back after a year but seem imminent...A year last time too.My friends came back right away, its all normal!

Amapoleon · 02/05/2008 23:36

I exclusively bf too and my periods started 6 weeks after in both cases. Just my bloody luck [excuse the pun]

LyraSilvertongue · 02/05/2008 23:36

Glad bf is going well. i can't imagine having to get up and heat bottles for night feeds. So much easier to latch them on and doze.

I have BF DD now for 20m. No formula or cows milk (until 1 year). I got my Period back at 6 weeks and every month since. Other women I know stopped BFing so they could TTC. It varies greatly and depends on you. Don't worry about it - the only downside I found was I had to deal with terrible PMS whilst being very sleep deprived
