ds 19 wks only poo's once a week - normal??

I've started weaning and he has one bottle of formula a day, basically his routine is

7am - breast feed
11am - two ice cubes of fruit and breast feed
3pm - breast feed
5pm - baby rice
7pm - 7oz bottle
4am (ish) breast feed

but we only have one poo a week - he is very unsettled at the moment and we're approaching poo day, I don't think this is right, when he was ex bf (up to 14 wks, at 14 wks we introduced the formula) he only poo'd once every couple of weeks and I was reassured this was fine but now it seems to bother him
I weighed him on wed and he's 16lb 12 so weight gain isn't an issue either...

any advice gratefully received as my health visitor is useless

Are you providing water with food? I know he's not having a lot of food but you should still make sure he's having a drink. Perhaps introduce some soft fruits (puree it if you must).

But if it's normal for him I wouldn't worry too much. It will probably change as he gets older and moving around more. You can try bicycling his legs that may help get things going though.

My dd was ex bf until 6 months and until then only pooed every 10-14 days. When I weaned her she got constipated (can't remember exactly when) but she had an awful time trying to poo. If you drink something like orange juice (which is supposed to make them a little 'looser') it apparently will get through your milk and should help. Or I have heard that you can give him oj directly but check that with your HV first.

Hope he gets better soon

I'm giving him some water in a tommee tippee cup with the food he plays with it but I'm not sure how much he actually swallows, I also manage to do massage most nights which I am hoping will help

thanks for oj tip wellies, off to get a glass now... I really would like to get some advice from HV but honestly she's crap, when I told her I was struggling to bf this time round as I have a toddler she told me to bottle feed I now don't trust a word she says

You might want to try a doidy cup instead - it's easier to see how much they are drinking as less gets spilled. Also they like the independence of using them (though it takes a few weeks to get them used to the idea).

we have a doidy too but at mo he prefers the beaker, I think thats because he can be more in control as obviously I keep a hold on the doidy to stop him tipping it on himself!

anyway latest update is it was his formula bottle, we changed to aptimal easy digest and he's had poo on sat and one today which is a major improvement, hipp organic basically didn't agree with him - he's been a diff child this weekend x
