who *isn't* ashamed to admit using formula?

feeling crap after reading the 'exclusive breastfeeding' thread! i find bf really hard and have set myself the target of 5 months, i intend to feel very proud that i went that long and then use formula happily! i can't be the only one! all the stats show low bf rates - so where is everyone?

Here we go again" EVERY bfed baby has an extra 7 IQ points"!!!!!" I'm sure ffed babies CAN be healthy". And you wonder why some ffeeding mums get chips.

Actually 7 is not a lot.

I bfed my boys for 6 weeks then ffed so do they get the extra points or not??????? Ooops couldn't care less does that make me a bad mother????

oiFoiF · 01/05/2008 19:49

i thought it was 7 extra points at adulthood or do they mean when they are babies? I am a bit shocked if it is a babies iq tbh because I have a severely disabled child and her iq might have been 0 and i think with that as a perspective its bit cruel to be measuring little babies iq, especially if their development is within normal range. I am sure someone will try and stick a link up my backside though

WilfSell · 01/05/2008 19:50

FWIW (though I have never seen any research on BF and IQ) I am suspicious of that suggestion too and don't think it helps the debate. But that's because I am suspicious of most claims about IQ since a. intelligence tests are very problematic and b. has the study controlled for social class, income, parental education levels? If not, then it is flawed data...

So I'd be doubtful that BF was a or the only causal factor in such an IQ difference...

Mamazon · 01/05/2008 19:54

I FF because it was right for me.
BF would have undoubtedly have been better for my child's health but as they were babies these decisions were left to me.
But i don't imagine they would have been better off being BF for a few months and then having a wreck of a mother because she simply couldn't cope with the emotional and psychological aspects of BF.

I am sure that there are many parenting decisions i make that others wouldn't.

breast is ALWAYS best for baby, its not always for mum.

i do wonder why people cannot just be happy with teh choices they make. why do people from either camp feel they need to not only justify their decision but attempt to prove that "their side" is right.

There is no right and wrong answer, only what works for you and your child.

ExtraFancy · 01/05/2008 19:54

Didn't genetics play a part in that study? I don't have a link, but seem to remember it suggesting that something like 80% of the population have a gene that, when coupled with breastfeeding, can increase IQ by 7 points. FF doesn't decrease IQ, nor was BFing proven to increase it in all cases - just those with this particular gene.

Something like that, anyway!

Mamazon · 01/05/2008 19:56

FWIW, i was formula fed. i am happy to compare IQ scores with BF Mners.

i really do think that this whole IQ thing is bolony

What is the difference between 'evidence-based research' and ordinary old research, BTW. Is it just that little bit more convincing?

If you look to the right on Fancy's link you'll see a study dated a year previous stating the opposite-confused!!!!!

This is why I think spouting the "latest research" is misleading, it could all change back again next year.

That's why I always go by the gov guidelines. When they put info in thier literature then I take notice. Not disputing the "latest"research in any way.

AitchTwoCiao · 01/05/2008 20:16

trollydolly, you're so right about the chip on the shoulder. this whole THREAD was started because bfers dared to have straw poll about whether they'd supplemented bm with formula. haven't people found the 'hide' button yet?
i knew i had nothing to contribute to that thread as a mix and then ffer (unashamed, i might add) so i didn't go on it. just as i have nothing to say on the teenage threads but their mere presence doesn't make me write chippy OPs about how toddlers are great.

nannyjo · 01/05/2008 20:16

How can I be ashamed to admit to using formula when that was my only option!! I s'pose I could have gone on strike about it but then my baby would have starved!!

I know breats is best, who doesn't?? But it isn't always possible.

AitchTwoCiao · 01/05/2008 20:17

lucky you, hedgewitch, to be so clever. if you'd had a choice between an IQ of 90 or 97 your whoops may have been the quieter.

K999 · 01/05/2008 20:18

I have breastfed, mixed fed and formula fed...am not ashamed of doing any of those methods....why should I be? I was doing the best for my baby and my family....whats to be ashamed of???

AitchTwoCiao · 01/05/2008 20:19

exactly nannyjo, there's no reason WHATSOEVER to be ashamed or to pretend that bfers think you should be ashamed. it's a snidey fiction and this is a crappy OP.

TheHedgeWitch....to be fair I have seen loads of threads on FF and some dont even end up in a fight!! I really dont see why so many people get worked up about how others choose to feed their baby. As long as the individual mother is happy with her choice then what should it matter what anyone else thinks??

AitchTwoCiao · 01/05/2008 20:22

a. start them, then.

and

b. er, you make up the milk and feed it to junior. instructions on the side of the pack. not quite as involved as bfing so perhaps that's the reason..? or is your 140 IQ picking up on a vast conspiracy to make ffers feel shit about themselves? gosh.
