My baby is 5 months old (she was 3 weeks+ 2 days early) and is just stuck on only taking 5oz. I have tried to offer more but she just won’t have it😵‍💫 sometimes she won’t even finish the 5!!! Her wet nappies are fine and she has at least 1 if not 2 dirty nappies a day so idk if I’m just stressing for nothing? Worried that when we start weaning she will want even less😭
According to my mum I was taking 6 x 8oz bottles at this age??
all answers/experiences please!!

If she’s gaining weight and having wet and dirty nappies I wouldn’t be worrying. How many 5oz feeds is she having in 24hrs?

6 8oz feeds at 5 months old seems like a lot

if she was under weight then I would be speaking to the health visitor.

in a months time she’ll be having some solids as well which she might be more interested in

She has between 5-6 bottles a day including night feeds (still has 2 usually which I’m fine with as long as she’s taking her milk) and as I said sometimes she will leave an oz here and there.

well that was my reaction too? And obviously this was the 90’s so I was probably weaned by then too😂😂

yeah that’s true!! I just hope she will still take her milk too 🫠

As a rough guide they should be taking 2.5x their body weight in pounds as ounces as formula in a 24 hour period. So if she weighs 15lbs she’ll need about 37.5 ounces of formula every day. If you’re broadly there then you’re fine! If she’s taking a lot less then maybe time to have her weighed with the health visitor.

If baby is struggling to take a full feed and seems to be getting bored on the bottle, then is hungrier again a short while after, that can be a sign they’re ready to go up a teat size. If you haven’t changed it in a while and/or they’re on one recommended for much younger babies that’s definitely worth a try.

Mine were both taking 7oz bottles 5 times a day at that age, so your mum’s recollection doesn’t sound that improbable to me but I don’t think it’s massively relevant either way because all babies are different.

Going to pick up the next teat size for her just now she’s on the correct one for her age however she has moved up early with previous sizes! I’m using mam bottles so I think the next one up is just the X variflow ones so that could be it!! Thank you for the reply 😁😁

Have you checked her weight? If she’s a good weight, honestly, don’t stress!

you can add formula to things like baby porridge and rusks so she could get all the nutrients and vitamins that way. Also, she’ll eventually take less milk as she eats more solids. I think by about 9 months you’re looking at 3 feeds a day. 6-7oz is fine in my experience

She’s just over 15lb (was born at exactly 6lb and was 3 weeks +2 days early) and on 50th centile so I am probs stressing for nothing😂
