MRSA while breastfeeding....

Hi everyone, I've been having an awful few weeks. I had a clogged duct turned mastitis turned abscess that is harboring MRSA. I'm on my third week of antibiotics and got prescribed another week of them. I'm so discouraged by this and feel like I'm feeding my baby infected milk, I was sobbing earlier afraid I'll have to stop breastfeeding. All the early BFing pain I pushed through and finally achieved painless breastfeeding, then this happens. :( Luckily it's not the typical MRSA with boils everywhere that burst I just have a lump in my boob that has MRSA in it. I HATE being on meds while BFing... My poor baby is being fed antibiotics from my milk going on 4 weeks now. I'm on septrin antibiotics and all the docs have said it's fine just to watch for thrush, but I feel like I'm letting baby down by feeding her medicated milk. :( Feeling very low atm

All the doctors I've asked have said to keep breastfeeding, but I'm terrified of giving it to my baby. Has anyone had any experience with MRSA and breastfeeding? My baby is 12 weeks old today and healthy as anything thank god.

I can see why you're feeling down if you've had an infection for that long.

Woukd it help if you spoke to the BFN about the antibiotics? I found them to be helpful when I was BFing and was prescribed some.

If BFing was painful and now you have a lingering infection, has your LO been checked for Tongue Tie?

And is there a BFing Support Group bear to you where you can get some RL support? Flowers

Thank you for the help! I got onto the BFN and they said MRSA doesn't transmit through milk thank god! Antibiotics are also fine. I was terrified of harming my baby with the infection and the antibiotics! Baby was also checked for a tongue tie and all was good she didn't have to have it snipped. Waiting on more samples from the abscess to come back to see if the antibiotics are helping, hoping it's all good! Thanks again :)

I had similar when my DS was born. He had an ecolj infection at birth which he obviously must have got from me, and had to be intubated. As a result I was terrified of breastfeeding him because I didn't want to reinfect him, as I didn't know whether I still had it (I had a few infections after giving birth that kept swabbing positive for ecoli). On top of this I have OCD. So sadly breastfeeding didn't work out for us in the end, though I did pump for a few months.

Just wanted to say I know how you feel, and to wish you all the best with it.

So glad that the BFN ciukd reassure you. Wink

Does that mean there is a tie? Do you know what qualifications the person assessing them had? Unless they were trained as a Tongue Tie Practitionerr* I personally would get them reassessed as unfortunately I speak from experience Flowers
