Is this thrush?

I have had what i thought was a milk blister which the top came off but nothing came out and it sort of keeps scabbing over.
However i have now had a sore nipple, sometimes itchy and a pain inside my breast.
The pain and irritation is intermittant and some days is worse than others.
This is all on one breast only ?

when I had thrush, I had a combination of symptoms.

sometimes itchy nipples with white fluffy looking patches, sometimes it felt like an intense itch in my ducts behind the nipples as DD fed. I would also get deep pain shooting towards my armpits from around 10 mins into a feed which would last up to half an hour afterwards.

I only ever felt it on one side as well...it can be pretty stubborn to shift if you have had it for a while; it took me three goes with a combination of fluconazole tablets/cream for me and drops for DD to get rid.

Info on kellymom and also the BfN's leaflet...the link to this on kellymom doesn't work.

If this seems tro fit, I advise taking the BfN leaflet with you to the GPs as they are woefully under-educated about thrush and getting rid of it

it does have white patches think i might go to gp on Mon. DD doesn't have any sign of it in her mouth though ? Am wondering if the infection could have got through the blocked milk duct ?

My DD never had any symptoms in her mouth, but she always had fungal nappy rashes. You both need to be treated to make sure you aren't re-infecting each other.

It could have got in through any nipple trauma from the early days, or if you have taken any anti-biotics in the last few months. Mine never manifested itself until about 9 weeks after birth (I had IV ABs for my c-section), and I had it bad again about 9 weeks after a course of ABs for mastitis.

Doctors aren't happy about prescribing the tablets as it isn't licensed for BFing and they have to take the risk as they aren't insured of they prescribe it, but the BfN leaflet explains that the amount that gets through in your milk is less than that allowed to be given orally to infants anyway. I had to be quite insistent with one of the GPs at my practice.

you can tell I've been a martyr to it, can't you?

I hope you get it cleared as it is really miserable.

she 13 weeks and is finally on abs for a skin infection she has had from 2 weeks. She has been having cream for thrush before the abs as they thought this was what the skin infection was. I have been using her cream but it has been painful again today.

If she is on ABs she could well have passed the thrush onto you. I would get yourself to the docs on Monday and get some fluconazole tablets...and don't forget the Breastfeeding Network leaflet

It's also worth getting your positioning and latch checked as well to rule this out as a cause of the intermittent pain.

another thought; if you have been using her cream it could be that it has started to respond a bit, but if it is in your ducts topical application will never get to the root cause, hence the pain gets worse again......

Thanks LD i will go Mon armed with my leaflet. I thought that about the cream i think i prob left it longer than i should have and now it's more deep rooted in the breast so the cream is too little too late.

I'm very happy I've seen this thread, I've been suffering on and off with nipple thrush for 2 yrs now and my gp has refused treatment until I stop bfing - hopefully if I go back armed with this leaflet I might finally get rid of it!

I feel very passionate about it as it took me seven months to finally get rid of it.

yes, I'm in Leeds and DH has manfully been pushed volunteered to step up behind the lens!

unfortunately DD has weaned herself now , so I won't be in any photos, but maybe I can get one of my existing photos in a montage shot!
