I gave my 6 month old DD c&g follow on milk today for the first time and shes been really ill and crying like shes in a lot of pain and then was really sick too! Do they need to have follow on milk or can they just stick to SMA Gold? Am also bf 4 feeds a day and giving 2 bottles of formula.

Don't need it. Stick to whatever suits her.

There is no need for follow-on milk. It's a big con, intended to get around marketing rules for formula milk.

Leave her on whatever she is happiest on.

You don't. Evil marketing con.

Stick with what you're doing until she's old enough for ordinary cow/goat/soya milk...

Thanks guys...shame I bought two boxes of the stuff...arent they supposed to have extra iron though once they get to six months?

nope

plenty of iron in whatever milk they've had up till that point

WigWamBam · 23/04/2008 14:31

My understanding is that the iron stores that a baby is born with start to deplete from six months; it doesn't suddenly happen overnight, and it happens over time, not immediately. You will be giving solid food as well, and there is iron in that. Plus, as MrsB says, there is plenty of iron in whatever milk she was having before.

Never give follow on milk! It was invented for advertising purposes only and is marketed as if it's a necessity when it isn't at all!
