Hi my baby is 6 weeks old and for around a week he was having hard pebble like poo, I spoke to the doctor and they said massage and warm bath, it did nothing and he was straining more and more whilst trying to poo. He was going every day but the pebble poos were big and making his bum sore. As it was the weekend I couldn’t ring my doctor so got some cow and gate comfort milk and started him on it sat evening. By Sunday midday he was having runny poo again. But it wouldn’t stop, he did 2-3 big runny poos to the point where his soft spot on his head dipped a bit as he was dehydrated, he then refused to drink the milk. So in the desperate attempt to get him to drink something I gave him the original milk.. he is drinking it fine but has been groaning and moving his legs a lot like he has trapped gas or something. A teeny tiny bit of poo came out too and it was solid but it was pea sized. I’m going to keep an eye on it but I don’t know what to do. I feel terrible thinking he’s uncomfortable. I don’t know if I’ve made him worse putting him on comfort milk then taking him off it.. I don’t know whether to try it again or not but I don’t want to keep putting him on it and taking him off it, I just hate thinking he’s uncomfortable, I struggle to get him to burp as it is since he was born he’s just held onto it. I can usually get a burp up during the day but at night he falls asleep. But with the comfort milk he didn’t burp at all. He’s not screaming in pain or anything he’s just groaning and squirming .. just wondering if anyone else has been through this? Or some advice?

I would speak to your HV /GP again. It might be the milk and a different milk to the two you have tried would help. Sorry I'm not very familiar with formulas as by the time my daughter needed them she had to be on prescription milk for food allergies.
She had pellet like poos when she was in gaviscon and we got lactulose on prescription to help her go. It's a mild stool softener and it really helped her.
The switch from constipation to loose stools could indicate there's possibly a bit of an dairy allergy at play. It can cause constipation as well as loose stools.
