Babies "should" have doubled their birthweight by...when?

Someone mentioned this to me the other day, in saying that although my dd is tiny, she has more than doubled her birth weight "ages before she's expected too". stupidly i didn't ask when they were "expected to"! is this rubbish or true? and if it's true, does anyone know the "rule"?

Oh sorry, should learn to look on kellymom before posting! in case anyone else is interested:

The average breastfed baby doubles birth weight by 3-4 months. By one year, the typical breastfed baby will weigh about 2 1/2 - 3 times birth weight.

GrapefruitMoon · 14/04/2008 17:15

i thought it was 6 months...

Caz10 · 14/04/2008 17:17

it makes me happy too soremummy! in fact, i've been googling away and some sources say it takes even longer,

this one says 6mths,

this one says 4-6mths.

oh, sorry both of these are for doubling birthweight, but the rest of the info is there!

i was doing the sums too - double dd's birthweight would be 11lbs 14oz - she was 11lbs 8oz last week at 17weeks

paranoid, moi?!

I always knew it as double birthweight by 6 months and triple it by 1 year. DS however doubled his by about 13 weeks.

Babycarrot doubled hers about a week ago (at 37 weeks).

Ooh, I got in a right tizz about this (wish I hadn't!) DS was 9lb born but didn't double his birthweight until about 9-10 months. I was worrying that my milk wasn't as good second time round because I couldn't rest as much, blah blah...he's absolutely fine now.

He's ended up the same height & weight as DD who was only 6lb 3 born, but clearly neither of them will be giants as I'm a shorty & fairly petite so why I didn't just look in the mirror, instead of the bloody red book, I'll never know!

soremummy · 14/04/2008 21:01

hi vlc glad she got to that weight... my lo has now started walking with the furniture so have been warned more active less weight gain but heyho who cares anymore not me i avoid the clinic like the plague is it really my fault if at my age i have now got such a terrible memory?

BouncingTurtle · 14/04/2008 21:11

Wow that's really interesting, ds was 12lb3oz at 15 weeks, he is 9oz short of doubling his birthw eight. So I reckon he'll do that by the time is 18 weeks.
