My lo is 9 months and we have just been prescribed a high calorie formula, just because he isn't gaining weight. I have tried different temperatures different cups and teat sizes. I have been using the syringe and I don't want to use the syringe. Can anyone help and give me support? can I combine the new formular with his regular formular milk

My DS was prescribed high calorie formula when he was just a few weeks old due to slow weight gain. What is the name of the formula? We were assigned a lovely dietician who I regularly spoke to and text with updates and weights. She was a great support with queries like this.

@pam85 is your lo not taking solid foods? Could you mix the formula into cereal, in sauces, etc. Which one is it? I'm guessing it tastes bad

RappersNeedChapstick · 27/07/2024 23:51

@pam85 have they given you any advice on making the new formula milk more appetising?

Kitkat1523 · 27/07/2024 23:55

You should be asking your dietician this….not some randomers on MN🙄

NotAVampire · 28/07/2024 00:42

@Kitkat1523 seriously, get a grip of yourself. Absolutely no need to be so rude.

OP if your baby is 9 months old they should be taking some solid food, so you could try and get the calories in that way. Could you make up some baby rice or porridge using the formula and some mashed banana or something? Phone your health visitor on Monday and talk it over with someone.

pam85 · 28/07/2024 07:01

@dementedpixie lo is on cow and gate but the new one they have put him on is Sma high calorie, it's so distressing for both of us.

@Kitkat1523 don't comment if your just being rude, I'm just seeking advice, I have a dietitian which is unless and people that may comment I'm just getting support not taking advice so I suggest you don't comment, as you don't
know my situation

my lo barely eats, his very active suffered with reflux and also had tongue tie which is now been sorted out. he may just be tall and skinny like my genes, but if its a concern to some of specialists I'm gona obviously do everything I can to help my first born, it's all new to me

my lo barely eats

Sorry that your Dietician isn't much use.

What sort of things does he eat? Maybe we can give you some tips to get some extra calories in with his favourite foods?

his very active suffered with reflux

Does he have any of these symptomss*?

and also had tongue tie which is now been sorted out

Has the TT been divided already? If not you might see some improvement afterwards. Our DS has a TT and would only really eat smooth purées until 12 months.

he may just be tall and skinny like my genes

He may very well be. Are they measuring his length as well as his weight? If not, I would ask them to next times he is weighed and ask them to record both measurements in his Red Book.

Hi, my daughter had to go on to this and initially rejected it, it smelt horrible so I imagine it tastes horrid too!!

she was breastfed at the time so we would mix the formula with breast milk, starting mostly BM with a tiny bit of formula and gradually increasing the formula and decreasing the BM. I imagine you could do the same with his normal formula to help him to get used to the taste. Within a week she was taking it fine 😊 good luck.

With weaning we were also advised to stir ground almonds in to everything. They taste of nothing so easily disguised but really ramps uo the calories in eg porridge, baked beans, pasta etc. also stir butter, cream and cheese it to anything where it works! Peanut butter also good but obviously more strongly flavoured.
