Losing weight while bf

Annie75 · 13/04/2008 11:20

I know this sounds like an odd one to worry about, but since I've been bf - eight months now - I've continued to lose weight, to the point where I'm feeling thin. I bf on demand, but DD doesn't have big feeds and I'm eating the recommended amount (I'm sensible about food and am making sure I'm getting enough and have been tucking into extra choccie biccies to help). Does this sound right? I'm wondering whether to go to docs about it or whether it's just a side-effect of feeding at this age...

I lost weight rapidly at about 6 months (have put some back on though ) without changing my eating habits.
I would say you know your own body best, and you know whether to worry. Does anything else concern you?

If you are worried then it might be worth seeing your GP to make sure nothing is amiss...but I would probably check I am actually eating enough compared with my activty levels by keeping a food diary for a week or so ...that way if you are eating enough but still losing weight the GP can see straight away & treat/refer accordingly....or you can adjust your food intake yourself.

This site is really good for keeping a food/activity diary...it's american but It's fairly easy to find equivalents for our food..

I don't know how much you're supposed to lose but maybe see your gp to rule out thyroid probs? just a guess? Sure you're fine, probably all the running about after lo

that is normal, within 9 days of having my ds i was back into my size 8s and my belly was flat again. i did not look as though i had actually had a baby.
bf causes the tummy muscles to contract that is why it is painful there whilst bf for the first few days.
and remeber that when bf the body is converting your body fat into milk.

hi Annie

this may sound silly but were you on the pill prior to pregnancy?
I only ask because since dd was born my body seems to have reset to 'adolescent' ie my skin [grr] and body shape look like they did tumpty-tum years ago before I ever went on the pill - something about the hormone levels I suppose.

Were you a lanky teenager?

StealthPolarBear · 13/04/2008 13:21

i was on the pill before pg
you're maybe on to something

Annie75 · 13/04/2008 13:45

Hello Mrs Badger How's motherhood treating you? Yep, I was on the pill and was a skinny teen. Haven't been this thin since then, actually. Okay, good to know others have had same experience. Thanks for the diary link too, terramum - I'll give it a go. It just occurred to me last week when I saw the scales dip again (I hardly ever bother weighing myself) that it seemed odd, but seems a familiar experience!
