DS is 8 weeks old and we had a really rough start with an emergency c section under general. He wouldn’t latch well, pumping lots, have used nipple shields for the last 5/6 weeks with varying success. we have sought all the support available and in the last week we’ve managed to get him to latch pretty much every time (w/o nipple shields miraculously).

baby’s weight gain is slow (HV tell me it’s ok but other health care professionals have said it’s too slow and not good - 180g in 2 weeks). Obvs nipple shields can mean slower weight gain because less milk getting through. We hope to see weight gain better in 2 weeks as he is doing lots and lots of feeds on the bare breast now and I can see he’s getting lots of milk.

we’re under the feeding clinic and DS is getting his tongue tie sorted tomorrow but we think it’s only a very minor one.

anybody got any advice about weight gain? He also can be quite sleepy/fall asleep on boob. He does enough wet nappies. Maybe he’s not getting enough milk? But I can see it in his mouth. Or anybody just in similar position? We can move onto formula but I love the bond of BF.

Ta x

Hi op, are you using breast compressions and switching breasts when he gets sleepy? These can both help with weight gain. Are you feeding really regularly, including overnight, can you offer any more breastfeeds to help with weight gain? I would look at these things first if you want to carry on breastfeeding. Have you had support to optimize your positioning and babys attachment to the breast? A deep latch can really help with milk transfer.

Keep doing what you're doing until his next weight check. The tongue tie will hopefully help. Feed every 2h even if that means waking him and if he's falling asleep when feeding try stripping a layer of clothing off and also gently tickle his feet to wake him up again. The best signs of getting enough milk are wet nappies and bright yellow poos
