Constipation

Unfortunately this runs in the family. My four year old daughter is still on Movicol after a year and my husband only goes once every four days (he'll love me for sharing that!) My seven week old son is filling his nappy with the usual mustard, but only every other evening and seems to have belly-ache in between. (I'm half breast/half bottle feeding and using Cow and Gate Comfort to help with colic.) My mother suggests a bit of demerara sugar in his bottle, but I'm not keen on that idea. Any suggestions?

Less formula and more breastmilk.

Cut down on the formual. Bf babies dont get constipated.

Great minds, Hercules.

I bf my dd and she got constipated so bad that she split her bum when she finally did go. GP gave me lactulose(sp?). I think this was an extreme case though.

I do think the number of dirty nappies does slow down a bit at the two month stage. If the poo is still watery and not formed in any way he should be ok.

Lardylumps - was your dd exclusively bf? No supplementing at all with anything?

lardylumps · 14/04/2008 12:30

Yes she was exclusively breast fed. She had really bad reflux however so it could of been the gavisgon (sp?) that we had to give her before a feed that bunged her up?

lardy- the constipation was the gaviscon....it is known for it.

lardylumps · 15/04/2008 16:37

No one told us that..

I had been going on at the health visitor for over a week saying she was constipated. She kept saying, no bf babies dont get constipation. Then dd split her bum. When she poo'd it was like sausages coming out of a machine and she was onle 2 months old...

yep gaviscon blocked my little one up, despite saying that constipation is only a side effect if incorrect dose given (which it wasn't)!
