Bad day bf - pulling away or endless pointless sucking

DS of 13 weeks seems to have forgotten how to bf! Every feed today has been disastrous. He either sucks then pulls away then sucks and this can go on and on and he doesn't seem to be feeding - it's as if he can't get to the milk. When I try expressing it comes out.

Other times he has just been sucking and sucking endlessly but not swallowing - once again it's as if he can't get to the milk.

As many others, I'm concerned about my supply. Have started taking Fenugreek to see if it helps, if that is even the problem. I battled for the first 6 weeks of his life to bf - it was a nightmare and then I thought I'd got it sussed. This week, however it's almost as if he's rejecting me. He does get a dreamfeed of EBM every night - do you think he wants a bottle more than me because it's easier? Any ideas?

Any one had experience of baby being rough when b-feeding? My 5 month old DS has started to yank and pull my boobs when feeding - it's agony! Any one experienced something similar and persuaded their baby to stop? I had planned to keep b-feeding as long as possible, but at this rate my b-feeding days are numbered... Thanks so much.

babyisaac, it sounds like a growth spurt to me. Have you experienced one of these before?

Please don't feel rejected - I know that's hard but he's just doing what he needs to and sometimes it can feel difficult.

The growth spurt is to build up the supply and it is common around the 12-14 week mark.

Just let him do what he wants to and it will probably last for 24-48 hours then he'll be back to a more normal rhythm.

Good luck with it - it can be quite gruelling.

If he continues to pull away and seems not to be feeding, let us know.
