(Reflux) Do I switch formula? Currently on Kendamil

My baby is 5 weeks old. At the start he was combi fed but we have now completely switched to the bottle (Kendamil) about 1 1/2 weeks ago.

He takes 120-150ml (4-5oz) per feed 5-6 times a day. However the past week or so he is really struggling with what I think is reflux. Everytime we lay him down he’s sick and it’s quite a lot.

He seems settled when he takes the milk but does suffer with wind.

we went to the drs yesterday and they prescribed infant gaviscon but we gave him 1 dose and he was violently sick for 2hrs so we don’t want to give him anymore.

He does have spots on his face, neck and top of chest but we thought they were baby acne. picture attached.

Im wondering if it’s the formula? What are your opinions? Should we try another formula?

Hi Op,

The spots just look like milia or ‘milk spots’ my 6 week old also has them and they are just now starting to disappear. Doesn’t look like it has anything to do with the milk, but I’m only going off a picture. Milia however is super common and harmless.

My first brought up loads after feeds and she was exclusively breast fed, I do just think some babies digestive systems take time to tolerate milk, whether that be breast milk or formula.

We also tried gaviscon and it was rubbish, only gave it 1 go.

I found the best thing with a refluxy baby was keep them as up right as possible during a feed, give them chance to burp and keep them upright after wards for a good 20 mins, other wise they will just the milk back up.

I recall by 3 months the reflux was miles better, my baby just needed time to mature and handle the feeds.

so unfortunately, time was the answer for us.

My second doesn’t have it, but is plagued with terrible wind pains.

Hope it improves soon, it’s tough going, hang on in there x

Unless the spots are changing straight after a feed I think they could be milk spots too.

If they're not getting on with Gaviscon, you could always add Dentinox to the bottle.

I'd also have a read of the symptoms of Tongue Tie, just to rule that out.

And if all of that doesn't work, I'd swap formulas. There are plenty of threads where Kendamil causes problems.
