Mastitis?

BFadvice · 10/05/2024 05:03

I've been BFing my 5 month old baby with no issues since she was born. Yesterday my right boob was a bit sore and is much worse today. There's nothing visible at all; no lumps, no engorgement, no cracked nipples or skin and she's fed plenty from it.

Just wondering whether this could be mastitis brewing? I'm going on holiday at 13:30 today and don't know whether to try and get a GP appointment this morning prior to leaving...

Yes, it can get worse fast.

Have a read of this from Kellymom before you phone the GP. It gives some great information, particularly on antibiotics abc how long the course should be for Flowers

Hi
i sometimes get this and think it’s a blocked duct, when you feed your baby on that boob try massaging the sore spots it works for me

FlyingHighFlyingLow · 10/05/2024 20:26

Could very easily also be a blocked duct. Sometimes it literally is blocked and mine has managed to suck it out feeding. He then detaches in horror as the milk behind it sprays everywhere like a bloody cannon soaking EVERYTHING. Sometimes it blocked as in a blocked nose when you're ill. Not actually blocked but inflammation. I'd try feed as normal, massage the area of soreness (gently!) towards your nipple while does so.

I've had so many blocked ducts but touch wood no mastitis from it yet. I've heard it's like flu symptoms that come on and get worse really quick.

Get checked if you are going away. I felt like I was about to die when I had it; you go downhill very very quickly. Plus it can develop into sepsis.

I had it this week. It came on super fast and one of the most painful things I have ever experienced. I think yours sound more like a blocked duct so feed lots. With you going away maybe see if you can get some antibiotics just in case!

Thanks for all your advice, I didn't realise I could have a blocked duct without it being swollen. I managed to get a last minute GP appointment and they prescribed some antibiotics but thankfully the pain has died down now anyway so I haven't had to take them 😊

Take them on holiday with you, just in case.
