Topping up formula with tap water

arlequin · 08/05/2024 18:54

I've just switched to formula for my 8 month old and am wondering if it's ok to add boiling water to the powder up to the half way point, then shake and then fill the rest up with tap water?
Obviously wouldn't do this for a newborn but he drinks tap water with meals.

No you can cool the feed by standing by boiling a fresh kettle of water up to 30 mins (no longer) before mixing a feed then if too hot stand in cold water. .....see NHS website.

No they shouldn't have tap water until 12 months but you could use boiled water that's been left to cool

The weaning advice given by my NHS health board says that plain tap water is fine from six months. The point of the boiling water is to kill the bacteria in the formula. If you've shaken it and fully dissolved the powder prior to adding tap water, I can't see what the issue would be. You'd just need to be very precise about the volume of water and use a measuring jug to make sure you add the right amount.

I would never do this with a newborn, but a baby who is drinking tap water already should be fine.

I didn't use formula not for lack of trying but both had tap water from 6 months, we're in the UK.

As long as you're using the correct temperature to kill any bacteria in the formula and you're in the UK it will fine Wink
