My dd is 12 months - she has bf exclusively and never taken to a bottle. I feel it is time to start seeing an end in sight but she just loves boob so much. Any advice on how to / whether to stop??? All advice very welcome! hmummy

Hi hmummy

I'm at 7 months and my plan is to go to 12 months but I bet I will be the same as you as it is so easy now although I am going back to work at 12 months boo hoo so would have to express If I did carry on. It could be that if you kept going for longer she would just wean herself off and then you don't have to go through upset if as you say she loves the boob so much, bless her, she knows she's onto a good thing lol. Has she had cows milk in a cup/beaker yet? How many feeds is she on?

If you do want to stop then I would suggest cutting out the daytime feeds first. Substitute a drink in a feeder cup or open cup to distract.. or anything really. In my experience they took to this quite easily.

For me, giving up the night feeds has been harder... and I've never had a baby that has self weaned. Maybe if I kept on going till they got to school then they would have

Make sure you are entirely happy with your choice though... its very hard to go back.

grouphug I am going back soon and DS is 11mo. I plan to feed morning, evening and night - is that something you cvould consider rather than stopping? Expressing a faff I agree! Understand it might not work out if you work shifts

grouphug · 02/04/2008 14:48

Hi stealthpolarbear yes I think I could feed before nursery and when i pick up it would just be the expressing bit that would be hard as I work all over the place just imagining me on the train pumping away lol. I wonder if the boobs wuld adjust to not feeding between 9-5 or if that would compromise my supply too much be interesting to here how you get on.

StealthPolarBear · 02/04/2008 14:50

have read a lot on here that supply adjusts no problem at that age
i don't expect to find it hard, and my DS at the moment feeds very often. But yes, I would stop bf if I had to pump twice a day at work!

katwith3kittens · 02/04/2008 17:55

Uurghhh ..... pumping. Yuck.

I'm still feeding my 15 month morning and evening with no problems during the day. He drinks cows milk in a beaker then.

After a day or 2 of starting this my breasts had adjusted to normal, no leaks or anything. I'm sure you could happily go to work and feed evenings and mornings too if thats what you wanted..

katwith3kittens · 02/04/2008 17:56

Ohh.. I've stopped the day feeds for about a month now and no problems with supply at night

hmummy · 02/04/2008 20:21

Hi, thanks for messages. Really nice to hear from others in similar positions. Feel some of my friends are already looking at me as if I should be on 'Extreme Breast Feeding'!!
I work 3 days a week (from when dd was 5 months) did not get dd on bottle first, which seemed to get the health vistor near hysterical - saying I should have drawn up an 11 week plan!!!??? After the first week of boob upheaval I was fine feeding her on my days off and only morning and night times when I was at work.
Grouphug - would really like to think she will wean herself! Added complication is we have co-slept from the beginning (cot thing completely failed) and now...I sleep downstairs (to get her off boob all night long)and she sleeps with dh! We are moving soon and need to get her into own room in own bed?? and OFF BOOB ahhhhhhhgghh!!

loved hearing from everyone...

hmummy, DS is 11 months and next month will also be going to nursery 3 days a week. like your DD, DS is a BF addict and we don't have an 11 week plan! I plan to just feed him morning and evening with a beaker of cows milk in the day. If that goes OK, we'll try cows milk at night too when the time is right for weaning. DS hates formula milk and bottles with a passion, I've tried to get him on them since he was 12 bloody weeks old with no success.
I gave him a beaker of cows milk to try today and he had a few sips so perhaps this will not be the drama I'm expecting?

LOL at "boob upheavel" - spoken like the mother of a true BF addict!

grouphug · 02/04/2008 22:30

lol at 11 week plan, I can't even plan for the next 11 hours.

I gave my dd some water in a doidy cup today and she just blew raspberries into it and I couldn't stop laughing so she kept doing it nightmare as eventually I am hoping she will take milk from it.

hmummy bless you sleeping downstairs can you not let your OH sleep between you?

hmummy · 03/04/2008 22:20

have tried all 3 in the bed but we just keep waking her up - bed not big enough! (worked on holiday over Xmas in bigger bed). After 10 months of being woken up every half hour to an hour by bf addict(!) sleeping on sofa for WHOLE night seemed like a luxury! Also because we are moving and will hopefully get her into her own bed/room (I feel an eleven week plan coming on. . .) I can see an end in sight. ps Dr Sears recommends fathers sleepng in with co-sleeping night time bfeeding addicts!!

I would def say dont worry about fitting bf around work (and not a pump in sight).

By the way my dd has water in a cup (sippy and doidy and normal cup) during the day. Totally rejected formula except with cereal.
thanks again! hmummy
