My DD is roughly 11 pounds and was wondering if someone could tell what the expected formula intake is for a child of this weight?

does it not say on the box??? Or a manufacturor website?? It will be something like 6-8 feeds of 4-6oz per day I should think but it's 10 years since a FF a young baby!

Now this is a trick question!

Because sadly the answer is usually very vague....like "whatever she needs for adequate growth".

And it's often to do with age as well as an 11 pound 3 week old will use up far less energy wriggling about than an 11 pound 3 month old who's on the go all day.

That's why the side of the tin is a guideline only - and no baby books will give you a precise answer.

But the guidelines also suggest that babies usually regulate they own milk intake so when she empties the bottle every time over a day or so and looks for more then you should prob increase the amount? But if she's contented don't try and force any more down her - she'll just vomit it back!

MadCrafter - it's on the box. But babies may vary. Are you worried about the amount your baby is having?

CHOCOLATEPEANUT · 26/03/2008 23:12

I think as a guide its 2.5oz for every lb of body weight. But thats a guide.

My ds is 16 weeks and is on 35oz a day and he was last weighed 4 weeks ago (will be weighed at clinic tomorrow with last jabs )and was 12lb 5oz

My dd at same age and weighing slightly less was on 40oz a day and looking for me so I had to wean her at 4 months.

MadCrafter · 27/03/2008 10:47

Well she is 10 weeks and already taking 32oz a day. She was weighed last Wed and was 10lb 10oz - so guessing roughly 11lb this week.

I'm not concerned about the amount she is taking in - concerned about holding of on weaning till 6 months, we're already using 2nd milk.

Isn't it WHO that go with 6mths BF exclusively before weaning?.. but in the UK 17weeks (4mths - 6mths) are the guidelines from HVs for weaning.

When you get to that stage (4mths) if she shows other signs (see advice on weaning one can find) then maybe it's time to wean then?

(apologies for quick reply, baby needs change)

MrsBadger · 27/03/2008 11:57

Martha, the official UK advice is 6m too

but HVs have to say that if you choose to ignore the advice, you mustn't start before 17wks
