White hot pain in breast - mastitis?

Hi everyone - DD is six months old and breastfed, although we've started weaning (vet purees, melty sticks etc.). I For the last couple of days, I've experienced a white hot burning pain in one of my breasts when she latches. It's so painful initially that it makes me wince, but it does settle down as she continues feeding. I can feel a low-level pain even when she's not feeding - like a background hum. Is this mastitis? Should I contact my GP or will it pass? Thank you!

I'd call one of the BFing Support Lines tonight before speaking to the GP. They might have an idea of what's going on and what relief might be available Flowers

Hi @RedPandaFluff not sure if it's helpful but when I had mastitis in the past with my DD, there was definitely a large lump in my breast and I also had a fever. However, whilst feeding my DS this time around I developed a blocked milk duct which was absolute agony and felt like stabbing pains, really painful. I think good advice from PP to speak to GP, my HV also had some experience of blocked ducts and could advise on that. Hope you feel better soon.

Please give one of the helplines a call. In the mean time you can also look at the information here. https://www.breastfeeding.asn.au/resources/mastitis This has got up to date mastitis info as treatment protocols have changed in the last 18 months.

Mastitis | Australian Breastfeeding Association

If your breast is sore, lumpy, hot and red and you have a fever, you may have mastitis.

With hindsight and after a lot of reading I had exactly as you describe. I also had infective mastitis and a breast abscess. However, what you describe never went away. I think it's thrush of the inner breadt tissue. It's unspeakable. Your GP will probably roll their eyes.

I have no medical quals whatsoever. It's a sound destroying level if discomfort and pain
.
Mastitis manifests as a sore section of the breast, usually hot and red. It is a bacterial infection and makes you feel rotten - fluey.

I hope things improve soon.

Oh I've just seen these replies - I checked earlier and there wasn't anything so I left it for a while! Thank you all so much for replying. It doesn't sound like mastitis then as I have no lump, no fever, no hotness or swelling on the breast . . . however, to my horror, it could be thrush as I had it before - I had antibiotics when DD was two weeks old and it gave me thrush in both breasts and DD in her mouth. I can't believe I forgot about that! It was bloody awful, how did I not remember . . . and this feels like a much worse version of that.

I might be too late to call BF lines but I'll do it first thing tomorrow. Thank you again for the advice!

You can also get a blocked duct in your nipple. I cried wi the that pain . Check your nipple for white spot and you can scratch the top off slightly yourself & feed & the limp comes out.

Hope you're having a better day today @RedPandaFluff

Hi everyone - so, the GP gave me oral tablets in case it's thrush, but Cherubs said that it's more likely to be trauma from pulling or bad latch, which should heal on its own, so either way I'm covered.

It's mad - I thought I was over the BF problems, over six months in!

Thanks so much for the advice and support Flowers
