FF 6 week old windy congestion

Hey all, baby is 6 weeks old, she’s always been congested from birth (rustly noise) worse when she lies down flat. I just assumed a c section baby but she hasn’t got any better. GP has checked her chest and it’s fine, so she prescribed her some drops for her nose.
But she’s also very windy (toots a lot), she does a “big stretch” of sleep at the start of the night but then squirms a lot for the second half of the night until she poops in morning time.
She had a slight rash on her chest which I put down to baby acne and has mostly cleared up with aveeno. (GP saw and said likely acne / heat rash).
But now I’m wondering if all this is linked and it’s CMPA/I ? She’s on Cow and Gate and don’t want to start swapping unnecessarily if it might just be an age thing that she’ll eventually grow out of. Any ideas?

All sounds like an allergy to me. But you won't know if it's CMP without cutting it out for a few weeks.

Mumoftwo1312 · 06/02/2024 00:29

Imo she sounds like an ordinary baby... don't all babies fart a lot and get restless in the night...?

I think they say don't switch to dairy free formula unless on medical advice

Mumoftwo1312 · 06/02/2024 00:30

What does the poo look like? If it's a normal colour, and the weight gain is normal, then I think allergies are unlikely.

HV coming today so will ask her what she thinks. It’s more the stuffy nose and sneezing / coughing that I didn’t have with my first that made me wonder if there was something more to it.

Poo I think is normal (1/2 times a day) orange/ yellow maybe a bit runny on occasion. Think she’s put on weight but should know this morning how much.

Thsnks for the opinions, tried infacol tonight and feel like that helped a bit with the squirming

@alfiebest how did you get on with the heath visitor?

We had/have very similar with my little girl. She's 5 weeks and has always tooted a lot but from 2 or 3 weeks she became so unsettled a night. From 10pm to 6am she'd squirm, snort, grunt and start sounding really nasal and congested although no mucous there, to the point shed get really upset, go red and cry, we couldnt put her down for more than 5 mins.... I had to sit with her on my chest all night terrified I'd fall asleep!

Went to gp who was useless as said if she's gaining weight what's the problem they wouldn't look at it (fine for him to say when he's getting more than 30mins sleep a day!). I started Dr googling and found a few suggestions including reflux, and cmpa.

Had a really bad night with her and she also had what looked like baby acne come out on her belly so booked a private GP appointment the next day. Lovely lady said it could be cmpa or reflux and to try cmpa milk first.

On the first day of using it there was a noticeable difference. On day 3 now and she has just slept 9 pm til 4am without making a single noise! So hasn't disappeared completely but we are still early days. She has no other cmpa symptoms but from what I've read some babies have only few symptoms and others have lots. She will still grunt and squirm a little during day but always results in a nice fart or poo so I know that part is just normal now and it doesn't upset her.

Not sure if it is cmpa yet but I'd push to try it if you're still struggling can't do any harm :) x

Hey! Health visitor agreed it could be CMPA but because it was “mild” it might not be worth moving her to the CMPA milk, but to wait a few weeks and see if it gets better or worse or stays the same.

I bought infacol that day and used it religiously at night. She has settled down a lot since then (without the CMPA milk change) her acne on her chest has disappeared so I think it was just that; acne. and her face is a million times better with the Aveeno baby moisturiser. It’s like magic.

GP was useless at her 8 week appointment when we asked about her breathing (it’s still a little bit congested on occasion but no where near as bad). They did check the chest and said there’s nothing wrong with it and basically dismissed it. If it continues it could well be asthma?

I didn’t bother asking about the CMPA at that stage because she’s been so much better and slept through the night the last few nights. Never had that with baby one; kept waking to make sure she was ok haha

Thankyou for asking, I’m glad your little one is better on the CMPA milk, I never realised how common it was. I’m hoping as we’re slowly progressing to six months and weaning there’s light at the end of the tunnel!

Ah so glad your doing better now that's amazing :)

I keep thinking with my wee girl that is it that she needed cmpa milk, or did she just need a different milk .. no idea! But I guess will find out I. A few weeks when we switch back to normal formula again!

The noisy breathing thing is worrysome isn't it, same here that doc said chest was clear but she sounds like she has the worst cold ever, but it's only when she's grunting and squirming with wind. Weird!

Keep us posted if you remember! Always useful because I couldn’t really find what I was looking for when I searched.

it’s really interesting because they sound exactly the same with the breathing! It’s probably way more common than we realise, just annoying no one can say what it is or not to worry they’ll grow out of it etc
