B/F and the morning after pill?

I'm b/f my 14mth old baby and we had a condom break, I really don't want another baby so am thinking of taking the morning after pill but I desperately don't want to stop b/f and am worried it will affect my milk supply Anyone got any information? I will need to see my GP in the morning and need to take it by tomorrow night.

GP may advise temporary stopping of feeding - there is no need. It is OK to continue feeding. If worried about the pill you could have a coil inserted instead.

Thanks for the info. Mears. I wouldn't want a coil fitted though as I don't like the way that they work IYSWIM. I really wish I didn't have to do this at all, I don't want to take anything but I don't want another baby either - what a mess - I'm desperately unhappy tonight.

DH will be having a vasecotomy as soon as possible so that we don't have to go through this again.

Cadi - have you thought about the mirena coil? Works mainly by supressing ovulation due to the hormones it releases. I would never have had a normal coil but after a lot of research decided the mirena was jsut fine, and am very happy with it - mainly cos ds is 10 months and I havent had a period (despite exclusive bf they came back at 10 weeks with dd)!!

Cadi · 04/12/2002 00:07

Hi Susan - no I hadn't heard of the mirena coil - well heard of it but not realised it was very different from the other type of coil. I'll definitely look into it - thank you.

Like you despite exclusive b/f my periods have always come back at 3-4mths post p/g very annoying too! Glad to hear the mirena has given you some respite

I decided against the morning after pill - so this month will be an anxious wait - but what will be will be.

Mirena coil has a higher rate of success than sterilisation - definately worth looking into

Cadi, PLEASE go for the morning after pill. There is NO evidence that the pill adversely affects supply once b/f is well established (which I think we can safely say yours is!). It is only a problem during the early days. There is also no effect on the baby whatsoever via your milk. If you really don't want a baby please get emergency contraception. You have a 72 hour 'window' in which to take it - so you can still take it 3 days on from your condom break. You don't have to see your GP, you can get it from chemists now (literally now if you live reasonably near a late night chemist. It is perfectly safe for you, your supply and your baby. Just keep feeding. If the pill makes you sick or you suspect it might, take a seasickness pill with it to prevent that happening. Good luck.

Mears - bl**dy nora that is interesting about the success rate of the Mirena - I can't belive my GP hasn't mentioned it When I asked about the pill I was told I couldn't take it because I have a history of depression when taking progesterone - fair enough but no other suggestions were made!

Aloha - thanks for the concern, my 72hrs were up monday night - it is okay though, if I am p/g we will be happy even though it wasn't planned. Our reasons for not planning another child are mainly because of the strain on my body (I have difficult p/gs) and also because I cannot have another child vaginally and would need a c/s and I'm frightened of that. Neither of which are insurmountable

Mirena is pretty amazing. I didn't want to take the pill again as it made me depressed too and gave me the mosr incredible migraines, but haven't had a single migraine sine I had mirena put in and although an still postnatally depressed, it's no worse than last time, in fact I am coping much better.
I know what you mean about the strain on your body from being pg - nearly a year on here I am sitting up at half one in the morning on here cos the b**y kidney stones are playing up again, all as a result of being pregnant. I couldn't do it again, which is why I have the coil!!!!

Knowing about the Mirena is now going to present me with a new dilemma! DH was going to have a vasectomy, he's okay about it but I don' t like the idea (no logical reason just makes me cringe!) because we didn't really see an option but it does sound like the Mirena is one.

Anyone able to tell me more about how it works, how they've found it, some good links for info. etc. etc.

In fact I'll post this as a new thread - I'll call it 'Mirena' suprisingly

Flip I assumed there was a section on contraception but I can only find conception and it doesn't seem appropriate to start a 'Mirena' thread there!

Anyone know where it would be best to post this???

Thanks - back later
