Oversupply & fast let down help!

Hello! I know there are many threads on this subject already but wondering if anyone has any advice… I’m currently EBF my 8 week old daughter, having combo feed for the first 4 weeks or so. It was tricky to get her going at first but something suddenly clicked and it’s been pretty good ever since.

However, I expressed when combo feeding and my supply went a bit into overdrive. Now EBF, I seem to have an oversupply of milk and a very fast let down. It’s particularly on my right breast but the left seems to be getting worse and my baby is struggling!

I’ve been expressing with a pump a bit before nursing which seemed to help but I used to only do it for 2-3mins and now I seem to need to do it for longer before she can comfortably nurse which makes me think the oversupply is getting worse. She also sleeps pretty well and doesn’t ever want too much in the middle of the night (usually just wants one side) which is great but means I’m needing to express at night for comfort and that, when she does nurse, there’s a lot of milk to come out which upsets her more the next time.

I’m now at a point where I’m trying to express both sides before feeding and usually once at night for comfort. If she then only nurses from one side though, I’m wondering if I’m making the problem worse but, if I don’t express, she often struggles which makes the whole thing almost impossible.

I’ve also just got rid of a blocked milk duct so trying to avoid that again…

Any advice?! I just want to be at a point where I don’t have an angry baby covered in milk 😅

The pumping is exacerbating the oversupply. Try just a little bit of hand expressing before a feed, and hopefully after a few days it will calm down.

It might be worth trying one of those silicone pumps (hakkaa or similar) to collect some of the first milk. They don’t actively pump so won’t be making the oversupply worse.

Thank you! I had a feeling that might be the case @cheerfulsunday. I suppose I should hand express for comfort as well if she doesn’t wake in the night or do you reckon the pump would work for a couple of mins (just thinking about speed!)

@DuploTrain yes, I’ve been thinking about that - am going to have a look into it!

Thanks both

Just ditch the pump for now, you could use the hakkaa at night for speed!
