You are probably ok - exclusive bf can be effective as a means of contraception when your period has not returned. When your menstrual cycles resume, you may ovulate before you get a period so in other words be fertile again before you know about it.

My way of thinking is to always use contraception unless you are ok with being pregnant again!

I would personally get a test for peace of mind + use contraception in future.

there is some good stuff about it on the kellymom site

You're probably safe but you can never be sure that bf is (still, or ever) an effective contraceptive for you. If you don't want to be pg don't risk it again

i never had protected sex with my partner whlst i bf. i think there is a slight protection whilst you are exclusively bf for the first 6 months unless you wean early. it is when you stop bf every two hours day and night that triggers ovulation. i got pregnant when my ds was 11 months and i still bf though not as regularly. my periods came back at 8 months.

How likely is it that I have my period whilst breast feeding??? My son is 5 weeks old and I thought my post birth bleeding cleared up 3 weeks ago. Had sex with my partner and then I sarted bleeding slightly but it looked kinda like more of the post birth blood. That stopped after a week and I went on the pill, had sex again a few days ago and now I am bleeding fresh blood, looks like period (sorry tmi) is this normal? I have only been breastfeeding...

Any thoughts appreciated

DD is ex. bf, and coming up to 6 months old: I got my furst period exactly 28 days after she was born, and they've gone straight back to their usual cycle ... I'd be very careful about using bf as a contraceptive ...

vixenwasp · 24/03/2008 18:49

just looked at the calendar, seems mine started about 28 days, must be period then! Can you use tampons? Fed up of feeling unclean!

You also have to make sure that you have no more than 3 hours between any feed.

I bf for almost a year & didn;t get a period untill i finished.

I used contraception after weaning approx 6mth. I think it varies from women to women..
