6week old bf schedule

Hi all,

my six week old has dramatically cut down his feeding time in the last week or so, going from anything from 6-8 hours a day to now 3 hours a day. His longest stretch now is 25 minutes and he only ever wants 1 boob.

last night he slept in 4 hour chunks, waking twice between 12am and 6am for 2 twenty minute feeds then again at 7am for a 15 minute feed. He has plenty of wet and dirty nappies (sometimes 10 a day!)

does this sound ok? I’m a FTM and worrying! Xx

Sounds ok to me but if you want to check, have a read of Is my older baby getting enough milk? Wink

DC1 used to regularly feed for 45 minutes. DC2 is usually done in 10. All babies are different.

It sounds fine, he has probably become stronger and more efficient at feeding.

If he's growing, sleeping, and seems contented himself then all is well and you are doing just fine.

thanks so much for your replies everyone!

I was desperately trying to fit another 20 minute feed before bed last night and he was having none of it but slept for 4 hours so I guess he’s full on what he’s getting! we have our 6 week check tomorrow so hopefully his weight gain is good 🤞🏻

Came on to say this. DS was a milk monster and cluster fed for 16 hours + and would only sleep on the boob. DD was done in a few minutes and refused to sleep anywhere but on her own. You say plenty of wet nappies, so as long as you’re responding to feeding cues and DC isn’t hungry or distressed it’s fine.

And make the most of the sleep! If he’s hungry he’ll wake up and tell you.

Don’t try and breastfeed on a schedule, just feed responsively. Their needs change all the time, with growth spurts, development, sleep changes, illness etc etc, you’ve just got to go with the flow. They also get more efficient at feeding as they get bigger. Baby will tell you what they need 🙂
