Tongue tie

My 9 week old has recently refused the bottle and after (half) successfully coaxing him into it we noticed he doesn’t latch onto it. He has absolutely no issue latching when breastfeeding. we saw he’s got what looks like tongue tie to the tip of his tongue. other things I’ve noticed:

  • he’s gassy and so quite fussy though seems to be improving a bit
  • he snacks breastfeeding a lot
  • He in the last couple of weeks sometimes clicks when feeding but this could be that me and him are getting lazy?
  • for background he’s not an amazing sleeper, day or night
  • hes gained weight really well
  • recently got a lot of saliva

my question is, (and I’m seeing a dentist but not available for a couple of weeks) does this sound like tongue tie and could thus be affecting the bottle latch even though he used to do it? Will he grow out of the tongue tie if so? did TT cut help you baby with gas?

I'm my experience supporting bf mums I'd say possibly yes and I wish all babies were routinely assessed for tongue tie. Many tongue tied babies can still latch just not efficiently, so many can fly under the radar initially, still gaining weight etc. It can be pain for mum, or gas or never seeming settled that become an issue before tongue tie is considered.

Speak to your HV (or isn’t that a thing anymore 🤷🏻‍♀️)

HV said they don’t check for TT. I’ve got a private appointment but thought I’d see if anyone had a similar experience in the meantime.

Also I should have said, weeks ago when he was taking the bottle he did latch properly but only now doesn’t so would that be tongue tie or just him forgetting / being unsure?
