Safe medications and 'extended' breastfeeding

Given that most women have stopped breastfeeding by 6m, doesn't the advice regarding whether a drug is safe during breastfeeding relate to a young baby completely dependant on breatsmilk? So does the situation change when breastfeeding an older baby, particularly after, say, 12m?

BFN drugs factsheet.

thought this may help

I have often wondered this too PrettyCandles. Although, the way my 2.5yo ds is feeding at the moment, he's probably taking more per body weight than a newborn....

Aaargh I can't read pdfs. Could some extremely kind soul tell me what determination's link says about ibuprofen when you're breastfeeding a 3-year-old?

mawbroon · 07/03/2008 20:04

Says it is ok to take, but contra indicated in people with peptic ulcer or asthma.

Thank you very much mawbroon. I suspected as much.

Thanks, determination. Interesting stuff, but it pretty much says what I had assumed, without giving any detail.

It would also seem that, considering the tiny amounts that do pass through the breastmilk, it is safe for me to take paracetamol at the same time as the baby.

I don't know whether the Dr Hales website allows mere mortals (as opposed to health profs) to ask questions, but worth checking. Google Dr Hales and breastfeeding.

No, it doesn't. And his replies often say something along the lines of "read the book!"

I can't remember what Kellymom has to say about this, must check.
