Hi
Need urgent advice started flu like symptoms yesterday and small spot of reddened skin on right breast so knew it was probably the dreaded mastitis. Rang midwife this morning who told me to contact gp asap for antibiotics which he duely prescribed but problem is due to sever aches and pains all over since 4pm yesterday I started taking co- codamol (can't take ibruprofen cos asthmatic) since asked gp whether this was safe to take when bfing and he said yeah if the pain is really bad but it does have slight sedative effect on the baby now really worried that have passed co- codamol onto DS and although he is feeding ok he is sleeping quite a bit today maybe being paranoid but just wondered what you guys thought - last took co codamol this am at 10 not taking anymore no matter how bad the aches get

You can take paracetamol, but I don't know what the limit is. TBH, those awful flu like symptoms should go soon.

I know nothing about the codeine. If you are at all worried about your ds call NHS Direct.

Good luck, it's awful isn't it? xx

I was advised to take codeine for bad afterpains following my last birth, and I was breastfeeding a brand-new born. It was fine. I think that the amount that gets through the breastmilk is minimal. The baby is more likely to get side-effects from the antibiotics.

I was prescribed C-dryamol (codeine and paracetemol) by the hospital after I gave birth due to the pain from the stitches. They knew I was breastfeeding so can only assume it's safe.

get the antibiotics in you asap - all that will get rid at this stage. Sympathy - I had this twice last year, it's grim. Don't know about the drugs, I mainly stayed in bed with a hot water bottle until the antibiotics kicked in. The cabbage in the bra thing is quite soothing too.

thanks got the antibiotics started yesterday nd stopped taking cocodamol taking small dose of nurofen as others onthe site swear by it for this still really achey can't believe how severe this can be just from a blocked duct luckily still able to feed fron sore boob and hand expressing to make sure its really empty feeling terrible about drugs passing onto DS though can't imagine what state i would be in if i didn't take them

I know! I never had it with ds1 but this time with ds2 i was astounded how a tiny blocked duct in one boob could make you like you had the worse flu ever - and I just could not get warm whatever I did. How can it affect your whole body - I ached all over. insane. Anyway, I'm sure you will be feeling much better already, and don't feel guilty, you are doing what you need to do to carry on bf which is the most important thing.

Yes, there are traces of codeine in breastmilk, but small doses don't seem to be a cause for concern. See the factsheet downloadable here:
