First time mum so I feel obsessed how baby is doing, so seem to have a new question each week but last few days he's been crying more than normal & last 24 hours his poo has turned green & smelly. Am worried because it's accompanied by him becoming more upset, but when awake& not crying he's alert & looks happy. Is this normal?

I'm assuming he's breastfed?

ara · 06/03/2008 21:58

i think i read somewhere that this can mean the baby is taking too much foremilk and not enough hind milk????? are you sure he is finishing your boob properly?

sure someone will correct me if that's a lot of rubbish but i had something similar with my dd when she was around the same age.

SoupDragon · 06/03/2008 21:59

Apparently it's just because it's passed through the gut quickly. nothing to do with fore/hind milk.

I heard the same as ara. Also, my baby had green stinky poo once, but he also had a cold at the same time. I was thinking it could have just been a stomach bug that my son had but God only knows??

fishie · 06/03/2008 22:04

yes, similar experience here too. i think it was a bug.

Green poos were always called 'starvation poos' but my personal opinion is that the poos can come when they've had bad wind as well.

If your baby is crying a lot - could it be hunger? He might be experiencing an early growth spurt...

have you used infacol or eaten anything different? can cause green poos

babyboos · 07/03/2008 01:32

we had this too and it turned out to be wind
you do need to wind breastfed babies whatever you have been told differently

MamaChris · 07/03/2008 17:38

thanks for all the replies - he's finishing each boob and eating lots, so I'm guessing could be wind/stomach bug/cold and nothing to get too worried about . he's less grumpy today so hopefully recovering, but poo still green and more explosive! will make sure he keeps getting plenty of milk and finishes each side just in case it's hunger or fore/hind milk imbalance

Are you swapping him over during a feed? If you are that can cause him to be getting too much fore milk which can cause green poos.

To go to other peoples points, there are other reasons for it but too much fore milk does cause green poo.

MamaChris · 08/03/2008 11:38

I normally try to put him back on same side first time he comes off, and switch sides if he comes off again pretty quick, which I assume means that one's empty?

poo now luminous orange - which I guess may be a route back to yellow - fingers crossed, anyhow!

You won't ever be empty, you make milk to order. I agree that if he is coming off again pretty quickly after being put back on it probably means he has had enough of that one, either because he's had enough or because he wants a drink.

Often people say to swap over half way through a feed, but there is no need to do that as he will get everything he needs from one breast and swapping can cause him to get too much fore milk which won't make him feel full and can lead to green poo.

I think it does sound like he's getting back on track.
