CMPA?!

My 8 week old went from being combi fed onto full formula feeding at 5 weeks and started having mucusy poos, was really congested and seemed very uncomfortable especially during the night with his stomach
He also had a gunky eye which went a bit red and swollen but I put this down to being a blocked tear duct as it’s happened before

The poos seemed to get worse so I suspected possible dairy intolerance (was on aptamil and also tried HIIP organic) so I took him to the drs who have referred him to a dietitian and prescribed him Aptamil Pepti 1 for suspected allergy. They said his eye looked like the start of a reaction. I started him on the formula that afternoon and by the next morning his eye had totally cleared up, he seemed more settled in his stomach and was actually finishing full bottles instead of having little feeds.

This was two weeks ago now however he is still really congested and his poos seem to have got worse. He does now only have one a day instead of several explosive ones but the one is literally horrendous it’s explosive full nappy liquidy and he is still congested.

is poo like this normal with this formula as it is very thin? And should his congestion have cleared by now? I did have a cold weeks ago which I’m wondering may have caused it but surely he wouldn’t have a cold/blocked nose for 3 weeks?

I’m going to take him back to the DR but I’m now wondering if he does have an allergy at all, any experiences of CMPA would be appreciated

It could be CMPA and he needs a DF formula?

Hopeful1992 · 05/09/2023 11:02

@SiouxsieSiouxStiletto - I’m taking him back to the Dr today, he is on aptamil pepti 1 but there is still dairy in that it’s just been processed down. I don’t like the thought of keep changing his formula but he’s done 3 explosive poo’s already this morning so it’s obviously not working for him

Don't worry at all about swapping a formula that's not suiting him.

My oldest has CMPA he was combi fed with pepti 1. He did still react to it, but not as badly. As he was combi fed we kept with it rather than go onto the totally dairy free one.

It can also take a while for the gut to recover from the reaction.

You could give it a bit more time or ask to try a different formula.

Hi, just wondering if you got prescribed the CMPA milk as I have just started it for my 5 week old, and wondering when the symptoms started to settle. He is always so unsettled and it’s just so hard, just wondering when it will get easier?

Hopeful1992 · 18/10/2023 23:02

@Shalorna hey yeah he is on neocate now! His congestion still lasted about a week but his poo cleared up within a couple of days! He still has slight reactions with his skin with the neocate but not bad so the doctor has kept him on it, we think it’s possibly the coconut that’s in it!

Hi did you try the nutrimigen first? Was your baby very unsettled for most the day if so did the milk help with that?

Hopeful1992 · 20/10/2023 21:48

@Shalorna no we were prescribed aptamil pepti 1 first, there is still dairy in this but it has been hydrolysed so the body doesn’t have to break down the proteins, he was much better on this for a few weeks but then started coming out in red blotches after every feed and his congestion never cleared up. He also went back to being really really windy after a few weeks on it. He was then put on the neocate and he is so much better

Hiya, not sure I'm in the right place here. Am currently loosing my marbles. My lb since just before 2 weeks only, he had diarrhea for almost 3 weeks to the point I took him to urgent care, Dr tried to tell me I was overfeeding( he's 3 months and still only has 3oz per 3 hours, 4oz if over. Bare in mind he's my 5th and they've all been on way more formula by now. After the diarrhea he has d a few days of normal poo, then constipated ever since, between Xmas and New Year he had a loose stool every 3-4 days, now nothing again. He's been grunty, mottled, unsettled (barley going down at all) reflux. He saw consultant Wednesday gone who after me suggesting it said it could be cmpa and prescribed aptamil Pepti 1, but this seems to make him scream and made reflux worse. I forget to mention he had virtual ward nurses for chest ressesion and grunting at one point who got us to change milk from sma little steps to c&g comfort and constipation, which didn't help, he has insatiable hunger, we tried hungry baby then mamia on Drs advice, nothing has helped. This Pepti 1 seems to make dry skin and redness worse too. Can anyone resinate at all, I feel like I'm loosing my mind. Just want him better but docs etc just keep fobbing us off, they've had him on lactaloose, movicol and now given cosmopan, all of which I've stopped giving as they just seem to make him worse. Also he had his first imms late due to the breathing issues 2 weeks ago and the screaming seems worse since then. Any advice or anyone to say it's not just us would be a god send right now.

I should add he's had the whole grunting, and sneezing since not long after birth, also had a stage of runny nose and watery eyes. Dry skin is mainly on his forehead and cheeks, but was getting a heat rash like rash. When he does poo it's loose and green. He's been back and forth from Pau and gp. Nurses tried to say he had bronchitis, but I've had 2 babies with bronchitis/asthma, it would of been my first thought of o thought he had any symptoms of this.Hes had foul smelling wind too from not long after birth, seemed to subside with certain formulas.
