Pumping

Hi everyone,

I wanted to give pumping a go so I could at least go out and have my husband feed our 2 weeks old daughter.

I really don't have an issue with supply, and managed to get about 100-120ml in one pumping session. Our midwife said 90ml should be enough for one feed so we gave it a go...

She finished the bottle in 5 min and was still starving after that, I ended up breastfeeding for another 15 min.

Is this normal? How much your little one is taking per feed at a few weeks old? I can't see how I could keep up! I would need to do probably 3 pumping a day to cover just 1 feed 😳 It seems completely crazy! Especially when they feed every 2 hours... I would just need breastfeeding and pumping all day long at this rate.

I really want to do combo feeding as EBF is not working for me, I would need to replace 1-2 feed a day at least. But clearly pumping might not be an option...

I found pumping and breastfeeding impossible tbh. I'd just feed with formula if you aren't against it and want a break.

With dc2 I had to exclusively pump and got over a litre a day without much effort, so I think it was doing both which was the problem for me.

At 2 weeks there's a growth spurt so she'll be programmed to Bf a lot to establish your supply. It doesn't mean she'll always be feeding this much. The best thing you can do if you want to Combi feed is to let her feed as much as she wants until your supply is established.

I'd give one of the BFing Helplines a call in the morning and talk through your plans and concerns with a BFC, thru should be able to give you some support to achieve what you want to do.

Congratulations on your new LO too Flowers

I'd read up on pace feeding baby will drink slower and should hopefully feel more full, should stop them getting a bottle preference too
