Stopping breastfeeding at 11 months. Has anyone?!

It feels ridiculous to go on to formula so close to 1 but I am just done! I'm done with the tugging and the biting and the thrashing around and I'm just done.

Has anyone done this? I mean I don't know how to, he doesn't have any bottles as yet so it might be impossible. There has to be a way right? Would he need a lot of bottles at this age? I'm so clueless!

I never replaced dropped breastfeeds with formula. He was only feeding once a day at 11 months (morning) and wouldn’t drink formula from a cup or bottle. I did “don’t offer, don’t refuse” for weaning coupled with distraction. When he finally dropped his morning feed we switched to a pouch yoghurt, so he still got to suck and filled his tummy a bit before breakfast.

I wouldn't use bottles at all. He's well old enough for sippy cups. If you're done with breastfeeding, don't feel any guilt about stopping. You've done brilliantly.

I never gave either of mine formula and bf them both for nearly a year. This was 20+ years ago so the advice may have changed, but I think that long as they are eating a good varied diet then they shouldn’t need any additional formula.

Neither of mine was having more than one feed a day by 11 months. I guess you could offer a bit of formula in a cup for a month?

pjani · 22/08/2023 19:09

How close is it to a year? Is it right on 11m or say 11m 2 weeks?

I always dropped a feed at a time, a couple of days for each step back. So it will probably take you a week to drop it entirely.

I would offer formula in a sippy cup with meals till the baby is 1 then swap to cow’s milk.

Well done doing 11 months!

Well done for 11 months. I hear you with the biting and scratching. I'm feeding an 11 month as well. Mine feeds more, eve and all the night 🙃

Personally if I were you I wouldn't introduce formula only to change it a month later. I'd offer a sippy cup of cows milk morning and evening. That is presuming your child wasn't premature or isn't underweight.

My daughter never took a bottle and was down to once a day be 11 months, and stopped completely day before her first birthday. Never used formula.

I continues BFing DD after a year, but at about 11 months she started to have cows milk during the day in a sippy cup.

There’s nothing wrong with cows milk, the guidance is just there to make sure no one drops formula way too early. As long as they’re eating well and having vitamins they’ll be fine a couple of weeks early.

My DD was BF so didn't really use bottles. I went straight to sippy cups when I started giving her water and formula. I told nursery to use sippy cups too.

bakewellbride · 22/08/2023 20:51

At so close to 1 I'd honestly just go straight to cows milk / sippy cup (obviously check with a doctor first).

Springbaby2023 · 25/08/2023 19:29

I stopped at 11.5 months but was probably weaning him down feed by feed for a few weeks before that. I used formula in his porridge etc to get him extra nutrients then went straight to cow’s milk on a sippy cup IIRC
