Pumping and formula?

I made a thread yesterday on feeding my week old DD who is currently on formula after a disastrous breastfeeding start. I don’t feel in the right place mentally to attempt further feeds (and DD is always too distressed or tired to attempt anyway) but would love to give her some breast milk. Today is the first day I’ve pumped properly - I’m currently getting around 20-40mls each session and am hopeful this will increase with regular pumping and increased food and water. Currently it’s all in the fridge as I’m not sure how exactly to use it around her formula, which is 6 x 90ml feeds per day. The community midwife is coming tomorrow so I will ask then but was just wondering if anyone had any advice in the meanwhile? Smile

Have a look on the NCT website. They have some great information about expressing and storing the milk.

The more you express / feed baby the more you’ll produce. If you want, you could express whenever you give a bottle to see if you can up the output.

As to when to give it, whenever you like. You can give it as a full feed or as a start of a feed with a formula bottle after.

also give the NCT infant feeding line a ring if you’d like some support around feeding her directly from the breast. You can also access support with expressing and / or feeding from your local breastfeeding support group.

If you had enough milk in the fridge I would give it to baby as one full feed. If you don't, you could either keep it until there was enough for a full feed (I think it's safe for 4 days in fridge but please double check) or give what you have first then make up a smaller bottle of formula afterwards if baby is still hungry.
I remember being told to always give the breast milk first in a feed so none if it gets wasted/unfinished.
