3 week old poos almost hourly

3 week old is combi fed. Although more formula than EBM. He poos almost hourly. But (sorry for TMI) it always sounds worse than it is when you open his nappy. It's a mustardy orange colour & there's never really much there, almost like a shart more than actual poo. He defo suffers with tummy pain & sometimes he will manage a couple of farts, although clearly not constipated. It just seems a lot to be poohing...any one any advice? TIA!

When my baby was newborn he used to poo a lot too, every single nappy change I would see poop. It slowly got less though, after a few weeks it got a lot less and now as a 3 month old, he poops around 3 times a day and he's happy. It might get better!! Make sure you burp him after every feed. If he has colic, infacol can help! My baby was combi fed too at the start for a few weeks as I struggled to get him to latch, and now is only formula fed because my pump broke and I didn't produce much at all

If he seems happy I think it's fine as I said at the top, it did get less. Any concerns or if he has a lot of tummy pain, see the HV for advice for sure just to make sure he doesn't have an upset tummy. If he's just a gassy baby like mine, as I said infacol really helped!

Which formula is he on?

Antihistamine62 · 10/08/2023 09:46

This was the only symptom my little one had with cmpa. He was switched to neocate formula by the gp and now does one or two a day

@SiouxsieSiouxStiletto Cow & Gate

Agree with Anti that it might be CMPA.

If you think it is from the link, I'd see the GP urgently. If not, it might be worth swapping formulas, maybe try Hipp Organic or Cow & Gate Comfort?

@SiouxsieSiouxStiletto GP & HV don't think it's CMPA, so no help in that area. I did try him on Lactose free formula but that only lasted a couple feeds as he threw up nearly all of it. It's so hard to know what is causing his discomfort & I feel bloody useless/helpless.

My little girl was the same (breastfed), she did a poo with every feed for weeks and weeks and was fed round the clock. It was always a 'shart'- can't think of a better word! Was so annoying during the night to keep changing her for the tiniest bit of poo :)

It eventually happened less and less and I think she went down to one or two poos a day by 3 months.

My formula fed older son didn't do it. She was generally a very grumpy baby but the GP could never pinpoint anything like CMPA etc. I guess all babies are different!
