Hello there, I'm due with my first baby in two months time, and am planning to breastfeed. I had no idea until I started reading Mumsnet that so many women had so many problems with it!
I was wondering if anyone has had experience of getting support with breastfeeding in Doncaster, from the hospital through the health visitors, what groups/baby cafes are there, attitudes to breastfeeidng in public?

And what type of support is generally available locally, besides the helplines?

I want to be as prepared as I can be before the little one arrives.

xx

i think you are being really sensible, and i wish i had known beforehand that you can have trouble!
in many areas there is a "peer support" project going. im just about to train as one in my area (Leeds). I found out about mine through my local breastfeeding cafe, called a "babycafe" and mostly called that in other areas too when they are linked to SureStart. Are you in a SureStart area? If you are you almost definately have a babycafe there.
Have you posted on your local site? (im not sure if Doncaster has one...? But the nearest area?
i would read up on it before hand too. La Leche League have some good info which helped me through my horrendous experiences!
i had a rough ride breastfeeding but the vast majority of people i know had a much easier time, so don't be afraid it will be really painful just cos what you read on mumsnet. on here people will post if they have problems and need help but obviously there won't be as many to say its all going dandy.
good luck!

try the website : www.thebabycafe.org.uk
and you can put in your postcode to find your nearest babycafe

Thanks MaeBee, I will look into Surestart more, and check out the babycafes.

Join the NCT - they run "Bumps and Babies" groups, for pg ladies and new mums. I found it very helpful chatting to new mums who were breastfeeding when I was pg about the problems they aced and most importantly how they overcame them. There was a couple of bottle feeders and they had useful advice to offer too.
