Reflux - what’s next?

My DS is almost 5 months and has had bad reflux pretty much from the moment he was born. Now I am a believer that reflux is a symptom so have been doing everything to get to the bottom of it. He has CMPA being treated by SMA alfamino and we have to use infant gaviscon to thicken slightly and help it stay down. We have had tongue tie cut twice and had him rechecked yesterday - it hasn’t reattached and his tongue function is good.
what’s next? Is there really no answer and I have to wait it out?

Is he in pain? Then get Omeprazole

Tried that for 6 weeks and it made no difference

Sorry tgat might have sounded rash. I am also firmly of the belief that it's a symptom. I've been in your position. Resolved at 10/11 months when multiple food allergies were identified. However if already on a hypo allergenic formula then maybe try another one? Not all agree with all kids

I’m afraid you might have to wait it out. My baby had horrible reflux and cmpa. Was on the correct formula (neocate) which solved the issue of explosive nappies and skin rash but the only thing that helped the reflux was learning to sit independently around 6-7 months old. Until he had strengthened his core muscles, nothing would keep the milk down and we tried gaviscon, carobel and omeprazole.

I don't know if it's necessarily a symptom of something else - it can just be a physical problem. Mine had terrible reflux which was much improved by infant gaviscon, but didn't go away completely until he started standing and walking more than sitting and crawling. He's now 4 and absolutely fine, no allergies, just slight eczema triggered by heat and soap (nothing food related).

My friend in a similar situation was advised by the paediatrician to start weaning earlier - the logic was that purées were thicker and would stay down better

It really is a battle and I think actions really depends on symptoms and severity. Iv struggled with my LO since birth with silent reflux which was a symptom of CMPA. My main struggle has been with feeding cause although he is quite sickly most tends to go up and then back down. I decided not to go down the medication route although I have nothing against them it was just a choice I made for various reason. Again it’s improve with age, my LO is younger then yours at 19weeks and I started weaning yesterday after a terrible
week of constant feeding. I know it’s a controversial subject weaning before 6months but I was advised by my paediatric consultant and having a much older child had before the change in recommendation it’s wasn’t a worry for me. My son was in nicu and tube feed for the first week so Iv been lucky to have support form the consultant.
