Hiya, just wondering if anyone has gone through this. So over the past 2 weeks my month old has had this weird rash come and go. I took him to the gp and got told it was normal newborn rash. Then his skin started to get very dry crusty and looked quite sore. I went again the second time and they prescribed double base ointment and emollient for his baths. But over the weekend he has come up in hives on his chest, arms and on his face. I researched cmpa and the rash looks really similar, but this evening it hasnt come up since. He still has a few hives on his chest but they dont look as extreme as this morning. Hes fine in himself he doesn't vomit up his feeds, but does seem to not poop for a day or 2 then it comes out really wet and a lot of it. I'm going back to the doctors with him tomorrow but I feel a bit lost because it comes and goes. Hes formula fed btw.

Babies skin is so sensitive, especially newborns. Could it be your washing powder?

pbdr · 02/07/2023 18:52

It could well be. Any green poos/ blood in stool/ vomiting? Any family history of atopic conditions (alllergies, eczema, asthma, hay fever)?

The washing powder we use is non bio, I use it on all my washing. Could that still irritate him?

His poos are normal colour but very wet 😳 my partner suffers with ezma and asthma since he was a baby, he was borm prem. My initial thought was ezma x

Possibly, it did mine. Try Method washing detergent, worked wonders for mine.

That looks similar to my DD rash. It started when she was 3 weeks old. GP said it was a combination of baby acne, eczema and possibly CMPA. My husband has eczema since he was a baby so we have a family history of it too. I’m breastfeeding though and have had to cut dairy from diet as the milk protein can transfer into breastmilk. So far it’s cleared up the eczema looking rash but the acne spots are still there. I use child’s farm oatderm moisturizer twice a day. GP gave me some emollient with paraffin but I’m hesitant to use paraffin on newborn skin. For laundry detergent, I found a small company that makes detergent with coconut oil that is ideal with sensitive skin. https://allavare.co.uk/
You could also try different formula that doesn’t use cow milk and see if that makes a difference.

@tunnel rush Keep using the ointment and emollient, and take lots of pictures of the rash if it comes back. That can be really helpful for the doctor.

Hi, did you ever get to the bottom of this rash? My 8 week old son has had a similar rash for the last 3-4 weeks. I have a doctors appointment tomorrow to discuss, but curious to know what caused your little one’s rash? I’m wondering whether it’s CMPA related. I’ve attached some photos of my little one. His face is also extremely dry, it feels like sandpaper 🥺.
