Omeperazol

Does anyone have any tips for getting a baby to take oneperazol?? She spits anything out if you give it in a syringe etc so we ideally need to try out it in a teat as she will suck it out and swallow, however the tablets are awful at dissolving so there's loads of powder that doesn't go through the teat! We've tried making the teat hole bigger but still gets suck...

Any advice would be appreciated! Xx

Hi,

This is a little tough, but have you tried squeezing your baby’s cheeks together after you give a squirt of the meds? It helps encourage them to swallow.

Have you mixed them with straight cordial? Not much, around a cap full.

Get the doctor to prescribe Omeprazole suspension instead. The tablets have enteric coated balls in them to protect them from stomach acids so they won’t dissolve. It’s a nightmare and I wish doctors would stop making parents try to use them just because it’s cheaper!!

This is an off she shelf one that I think they brought out last year, but my DC is prescribed a “special order” they call it. It’s made up in a compounding pharmacy and they add a sweet fruit flavouring to it. So much easier to get it in her. When she was tiny I had to give it a tiny bit at a time. So I’d give 1ml then a drink then wait a few mins and give another 1ml. It was a pain but better than her spitting it all out. Quite quickly though she was happy to take the lot without any fuss.

Omeprazole, Powder for Oral Suspension | Rosemont Pharmaceuticals

Omeprazole in a liquid format has long been an unsatisfied need in patients with swallowing issues, previously having only been available as an unlicensed special. Licensed tablets and capsules can also present problems for patients with swallowing dif...

In my diary for 8am tomorrow to give docs a call! She did mention it, but said I had to try the tablets first which I agree, is so silly! They're impossible to give to babies

We used to do half water half apple juice to make it more palatable.

HVPRN · 28/06/2023 21:07

@rebecca199 apologies, thinking older child. How old is baby? Get the suspension instead.

romdowa · 28/06/2023 21:17

We got liquid losec and used the medication dummies that have the little hole for the syringe. It was around a tenner but a total life and sanity saver.
