My baby has reflux and because sma althera is so thin the reflux is becoming worse dr told me not to use infant gaviscon anymore as it’s causing severe constipation so just sticking to lansoprazole now

Speak to your pharmacist, there are thickeners available, carobel and thick'n'easy are two that come to mind

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 27/06/2023 14:11

I was going to say Carolbel as well. How are you getting on now Wink

Spockrates · 27/06/2023 21:49

@SiouxsieSiouxStiletto still struggling to get more than 3oz into her the milk flows so quickly it gives her painful hiccups due to her drinking so quickly and she cries I put infant gaviscon in the bottle today and although it took 3hrs to feed her because it kept blocking the teat there was no crying and no painful hiccups

That's sounds so difficult. What bottles are you using and are you pave feeding? Have you tried a thickener yet too?

Spockrates · 28/06/2023 22:05

@SiouxsieSiouxStiletto no I haven’t tried yet I was waiting to speak to the Hv first and I forgot to mention it to her today :(

carobel and get a variflow teat for the bottle if you’re going to use a thickener

Spockrates · 28/06/2023 22:49

@Danikm151 will a variflow teat fit on a dr browns bottle?

I’m going back 27 years now and was having exactly the same issues with my daughter. The health visitor kept advising me to persevere, my mum advised me to change the formula brand which I did, I changed to cow and gate and never looked back.

on another note my goddaughter was having horrendous issues with her son constantly crying and vomiting and she was breast feeding, it turns out he’s lactose intolerant, so she had to adhere to a Lacto free diet for his sake. As you’re feeding a cows milk formula maybe this could also be the reason. I’m afraid it’s trial and error and a real pain in the bum.

To be honest cows milk is very difficult for humans to digest and is only fit for baby cows, my niece had to have soya formula due to intolerance. Hope you get it sorted, it’s very distressing for everyone.

@Snippit she was on cow and gate but had to change to sma althera due to suspected cows milk allergy because it’s hydrolysed it’s really watery so pours out of the teat so quickly

Hello!

My baby is 11 weeks old and she has a cows milk allergy and severe reflux.
She was on SMA Althera but is now on SMA Alfamino, she was the same because of how watery the fluid is! She would bring up most of her feed all the time, i bought some carobel over the counter after speaking with a pharmacist and it has helped so much, we use a quarter of a scoop in her feed and it thickens it just enough to keep it down, anything more is too thick for her 🙂

Danikm151 · 02/07/2023 09:29

@Spockrates i didn’t use dr brown but they may have an x shaped teat in their range
