Struggling to remember - is this normal breastfeeders?

My 3 day old has lost 10% body weight despite me feeding on demand around the clock.

He seems to feed probably hourly, for 5-10mins and falls asleep on the boob.

No amount of tickling, blowing on him, changing his nappy etc wakes him to finish the feed.

Is this normal?

I'm really keen not to have to pump/top up with formula so want to get him as fat as possible before his day 5 app.

He literally woke every hour all night long for a quick snack! Would definitely prefer him having longer feeds/sleeps!

Has your milk come in? Mine didn’t until day 3, but otherwise sounds like all 3 of my babies!

It was normal for me. Maybe worth checking for tongue tie?

MrsBudd · 20/06/2023 19:35

And congratulations on your new arrival 🤩

What type of birth did you have? My crash section lost prob about that weight after birth once all the fluids from the womb and surgery dissipated.
Have you seen midwife since you got home?

Sounds pretty normal but it's very odd that they weigh at the 3 day appointment? They don't weigh here until at least day 5

They need to get bigger with bigger stomachs to go longer between feeds, I don't think you can encourage it.

Agree with PP there's a lot that can delay milk coming. For me it was about 4 days.

Is baby jaundiced OP?

You could try doing breast compressions when he becomes sleepy/stops suckling but is still latched on.

I would hand express and use that (either feed by spoon/strings) as a mini top up to encourage any jaundice to flush out. Plus 10% is a lot to lose by day 3, so any extra milk will help!

Sounds normal. My son had tongue tie. He was born 8lb 9oz and went down to 7lb 15oz and after that gained weight perfectly. Got the tongue tie sorted. X
