3 week old unsatisfied after feeds

My 3 week old was drinking 3-4 ounces every 4 hours a week ago then she went to 4-5 ounces every 4 hours yesterday and today she’s been drinking 5ounces but seeming unsatisfied afterwards, I’m worried she’s drinking too much? Everyone says 5 ounces is a lot for a 3 week old she’s growing on the 75th centile, today she wouldn’t settle after her feed seeming hungry so i put what was left of the milk into her bottle which was 3 ounces and she drank 2 so in total drank 7 ounces and then she was happy to go to sleep is it normal for a 3 week old to be so insatiable? She’s not so hungry at night and only wakes once at 1 or 2 am then she’ll sleep to 5 or 6 am sometimes will sleep till 7am

Is there a reason that she's only being fed every 4 hours? Have you tried feeding a little less and more often, say every 3 hours?

5oz is a lot for a 3 week old and 7oz is definitely too much. DD is 14 weeks old and has only started taking 7oz in the last couple of days. Does she definitely want more milk or is she just looking for something to suck? A dummy might be helpful if you don't use one already.

It may just be a phase/growth spurt but I wouldn't give 5-7oz often to a 3 weeker

Surely she needs to be fed more often than that?

Followill · 08/06/2023 07:06

I agree with feeding her more frequently in the day. If she's not waking at night, she will take more in the day. I had two babies who slept through very early on and both went 12 hours overnight without a feed by 12 weeks. They fed every 3 hours in the day and did have larger than the suggested feeds.

DS1 also liked to comfort suck, so would still be rooting after a large feed. I gave him a dummy after a feed and only if he didn't settle after that would I offer more.

Meant to say both of mine still took the same overall volume as was recommended but obviously less spread out over the day.

@Followill when she was in the hospital she had jaundice and wasn’t drinking enough every 3hrs so I was advised to feed every 4hrs so she’d be more hungry and it worked now if I try to feed sooner she’s too tired to drink

@Followill she doesn’t settle with a dummy after 5oz I just gave her 6oz she is still rooting even with the dummy not sure if I should give her an extra ounce’s
