I want to drop the formula bottle now he is gaining weight but he is in such a routine now he refuses to BF after his 8pm BF and will only take a bottle before bed. I tried tonight and he just would not take the breast, but happily took the bottle. Help!

And why the hell not?

SparklyDYSONGothKat · 20/02/2008 23:03

I want to get to 1 year, at least. I have always given up BF by 5 months, so already I am doing better.

Do you have a good electric pump?? Fennel tea, a friend of mine swears by for increasing her supply. She was like a fountain. Word soon spread around the neighbourhood courtesy of her HV, and the hospital rang to ask her to be a milk donor!

SparklyDYSONGothKat · 20/02/2008 23:08

I have a Lactaline double pump, was expressing huge amount when he was in SCBU and afterwards too.

Blimey. Good for you. I've never had more than 5oz from both barrels with my pathetic Medela Swing.

SparklyDYSONGothKat · 20/02/2008 23:15

when he came home from SCBU they gave me about 12 bottles of fresh and frozen milk back. I can still express about 3oz off, but Callum has adjusted me milk supply and its not as much as it used to be.

have tried for a hour to get him to take the breast rather than bottle, have tried bathing with him, he wouldn't feed in the bath, tried to do it in the bedroom with dimmed lights, just screamed!! had to give him the bottle again

oh sgk i'm sorry he's still not feeding. no advice, just hugs.

fingerwoman · 21/02/2008 21:28

I would really just try reducing the amount each night. or express and give him that instead, at least then it's breastmilk not formula.
it sounds like he has just got into the habit of having the formula before bed- perhaps you could mix ebm with the formula and gradually get it to all ebm, and then gradually reduce it and try and lengthen the breastfeed until that's all he's having?

ladytophamhatt · 21/02/2008 21:34

would changing the teat of the bottle put him off?

maybe a diff shape teat or slower flow will make his think it stoo much trouble and want it from teh direct source instead....

SparklyDYSONGothKat · 21/02/2008 21:46

changing the teat might work, we are using NUK bottles because they are very similar to the breast, that might be our downfall.

ohhh I LOVE the fact that my little bit of advice migt be the one that works.

SparklyDYSONGothKat · 21/02/2008 22:09

will try with advent bottles tomorrow (he did NOT like them before) and see what happens, will also try and express 4oz off for him too so he is only have EBM

Tallis · 21/02/2008 23:09

if he likes avent too much i can post you an unused dr brown's bottle - have three, was going to put them on FFP as dd only likes those v fiddly MAM ones. good luck with the expressing.

chipmonkey · 21/02/2008 23:34

Ds3 hated avent, Sparkly and he was prem as well.

ladytophamhatt · 23/02/2008 17:03

Hows he been sparkly?

did the teat change work?

SparklyGothKat · 23/02/2008 17:28

we had compancy last night, so didn't fancy a screaming callum so gave him the NUK bottle but am going to give him EBM in an advent bottle later

ladytophamhatt · 25/02/2008 16:26

did it work?
