Infant feeding

Confused switching to formula. Please help

So I had been pumping as my DD never latched and got to a point where I was able to pump just enough for her. I was so proud of myself and felt so accomplished.

Until about a month ago when I took her to meet my partners family who are from another country. I only had time to pump twice a day until the last few days where there was no time at all. Where I would normally pump between 300mls in the morning today I got less than 30ml.

While we were there we took DD to the doctor about rashes she would get and the dr said it’s due to an allergy, they gave her an IV and her skin cleared up. Since then I’ve been trying to avoid eggs (family history on his side) but I keep forgetting to check ingredients and accidentally eating egg in one form or another (dried egg whites for example). Her rashes are coming back 😔

I was planning to try and up my supply again but with the allergy in mind I’m seriously considering switching to formula feeding but here’s where I’m confused.
DD would normally take 120ml bottles of expressed milk/formula if I didn’t have enough for her. I bought comfort formula as she seems constipated at the moment. I was looking to make up a test bottle as I had read some reviews claiming it was slimy and wouldn’t come out of the teat when the instructions confused me. I don’t know how much I’m supposed to make up. Do I follow the age, the weight or how much she takes? She’s 4mo but weighs 7kg (she’s not chunky but she’s long). I assume I should follow instructions based on her age but I don’t see her drinking all 180mls but it says 120mls is what a 2mo should be having.

im sorry the post is so long, i appreciate any advice you have

Dose she have an allergy to egg or cows milk? I’m not sure about the comfort milk as far as constipation is concerned, changing milk can cause either constipation or diarrhoea or another reaction or nothing at all. Best thing for constipation is movement, massages and tummy time etc. When making formula up just make it to what she drinks. My LO has a cows milk allergy I use Aptimil pepti one prescribed by my doctor he drinks between 3-4oz so I make a 4oz bottle with 4 scoops of formula. If she drinks all 4oz make another 2oz and if she drinks all of that you know to make either 5-6oz bottles. Don’t worry about what it says on the tin go by what she wants. Hopefully that’s helpful. My sons 3months and drinks what a 2 week old drinks if I went by the tin, but then I have an 11year old who when he was a baby could easily down a 6oz bottle at 3 months

If you’re not sure right now, try the ready made up bottles you can buy.

Comfort formula worked really well for my mine when they had constipation issues. I used Aptamil.

Are you sure it's an egg allergy? You might want to watch for symptoms with formula in case it is a milk protein allergy as mentioned above.

In terms of what to make, I'd make up a 180 bottle and see what she takes. Let her stop when she's done and follow her cues and you'll know from that whether to make a bit more or less for her next feed.

I wouldn't worry about comfort milk. I would just choose a stage 1 milk that is easily available where you live and shop

Also the constipation could be a symptom of an allergy

Thanks for your replies. I’ll make the 180 and follow her lead, I was just worried she wouldn’t get the full amount of nutrients she needs if I made her usual amount.

We only got back to the UK a couple of days ago so I’m still trying to find somewhere we can do an allergy test (the gp wants me to do a 2 week food diary and take it from there, I’d rather find out sooner). Could be anything I suppose, just thought I’d start with eggs as my brother in law had the same issue as a baby.

I’m doing bicycle kicks and tummy massages but it doesn’t seem to be doing the trick, will up the tummy time. She’s never been constipated before, do new symptoms pop up randomly?

My daughter had a constipation issue when she was a baby, I can’t remember the name of the medication she was prescribed to put in her bottles now, I’m sorry.

But it is a common issue - speak to your gp
