hi folks. dd is nearly 10mths and ebf until 6 months and we started blw. she doesnt seem that interested through the day any more in bf. she gets a 6.30am feed then around 10.30, 2.30, 6.30, 11.30pm. the middle 3 - she latches on / off, sits up, looks around, goes back for a few sucks and off again. she takes big feeds in the morning and last thing at night. so - do you think she is started to self wean or is this just a phase? also - i really do not want to give her ff but am wondering if she is geting enough with 2 big feeds and quick drinks through the day.

after all our diffs with bf in the early days - i hope she isnt moving towards stoppping!

offer milk before food - milk is still more important to her as a source of nutrition up until 12 months

I would cut back on offering food altogether if you feel she is not getting as much milk as she should

DS radically increased his solids and cut down his bfs at around 10 months & was very worried about it as well as I didn't want him to wean prematurely after all the hassle we had getting bfing going during the first few months....I kept offering & offering bfs all day in the hope that he would take some more...but then he suddenly he went back to bfing loads & reduced his solids again. Wasn't sure at the time if it was down to me persevering with trying to get him to bf or if he just did it on his own....but looking back I think it was a bit of both - him having a growth spurt & wanting solids instead of milk & me reminding him that bm was still on offer. He is 3.5yrs now & still bf once a day

Weeonion- DD did this at ten months. We realised after a week it was because she had some big teeth coming through and she was sore. But you should definitely be offering milk first anyway.

whomovedmychocolate · 19/02/2008 20:36

Oh I should have said, she's still bf at 16 months (which is exhausting her four month pregnant mum!)

geordiemacminx · 19/02/2008 20:36

IIRC the recommended "amount" of milk at this age is about 22oz - As you know, ds is now ff, but he has a bottle when he wakes - 4/5oz, the same about 9, usually 8oz about 4pm and then 8oz at bed time, so he is probably having the same amount of milk as C?

She doesnt eat a huge amount does she? Perhaps she isnt very hungry at the moment, I know C goes through phases of being ravenous, to having very little... she's bright and healthy and putting on weight, I wouldnt worry.

pulapula · 19/02/2008 21:43

My DS is 8mo and has a good bf when he wakes in the morning but then small feeds before lunch and tea. He doesn't take much at bedtime now either. But if i feed him somewhere quiet he does take more. I did think about dropping his 11am feed but think its a bit early.

I guess as you are BLW it's difficult to add BM to her meals (i add it to purees/weetabix etc) to compensate for the short feeds, although guess you could add milk to scrambled egg etc. But even if your DD is only having 4oz/feed then she'll be getting enough with 5 feeds/day, so i'm sure she'll be fine. Have you got a pump, as you could then see how much she is drinking?

check out the Kelly Mom website, I read a really interesting article on self weaning there, it suggests that so many distractions during the day and food being offered babies appear to self wean when in fact they aren't and that normally babies wouldn't self wean til about 18 mths

thanks for that link. interesting reading but i think we are doing pretty much everything there. she does get offered bf before meals but maybe i need to do it more often? she doesnt get a bottle nor juice etc outside of meal times. she isnt a huge solids eater so i dont think she is filled up on that. she has just cut her first 2 teeth so maybe that is it??
i am tryingto express to keep my supply up and i use it to cook her veg, pasta etc.

hmm. i will keep going with this. i dont want her (us!) to stop bf yet.

Hi WO

My Ds goes through phases of not being interested in bfing during the day or wanting to be latched on the whole time.

I think if she is having a good feed first thing in the morning and ladt thing at night then I wouldn't be too worried.

I'm so impressed that you have managed to bf to 10 months BTW.You had such a hard time of it in the beginning.

last not ladt!!
