How long is boiled water good for?

If poured immediately in to a sterilised bottle and allowed to cool, how long is it useable for? Can I use it to mix formula the next day?

Ooh crikey, this is gonna turn into one of THOSE threads...

You're now supposed to boil water for bottles as you need them and not store cool boiled water for later...
ie make the bottles up as you need them.

oo crikey, didn't mean to start anything... new to bottle feeding after 6months of bfing, but going back to work soon so starting to wind down the bfing. So does that mean I can't leave a bottle of boiled water in the fridge for night feeds? It takes so long to cool down and with a screaming baby at 5am its so awful. Blimey bfing is so much easier, no waiting, my boobs are always ready! I guess I'll have to get ready mix in, but ds isn't so keen on it.

oh streuth

when I did use a bottle I used to boil a kettle in morning .. fill 6 bottles, leave them on the side and just tip in the formula when I needed them .. shake and go

and no re-heating it .. just serve as is .. babies are fine at room temp

I know advice has changed but still don't care

but I never met anyone who had an issue with it

oop! been doing it all wrong. i think you're right fio, I'll have to shop around to find some ready mixed stuff he likes. I guess what threw me is all these bottle warmer things on the market. I've never needed them even for ebm cos ds doesn't mind it at room temp, but I had assumed they were for formula feeds, where you warm the water up to body temp (hmmm nice bacteria breeding temp) and add powder.

oh by the way, is ok to stand the freshly made up bottle in a pan of cold water (with the top on of course) to cool it down again so its the right temp for ds to take?

thanks for that phono, I think that's what I might try if I can't find any ready mix he likes or discover I can't afford to go down that route.

ok, here's another question. I think I know the answer but just checking. I presume I have to do as the manufacturer says when they say any unused formula powder has to be thrown away four weeks after opening. It's not just a for the manufacturers to get us to buy more is it? I'm assuming it's because of bacteria growth. Shame cos I'm going to have to throw away an almost full pack.

Oh, I never notcied that. Prob cos it never lasts that long in my house. But yes, i would guess it's to do with the formula not being sterile etc

Bear in mind too that the powder is NEVER sterile - so an open packet is even more dodgy, but haviong said that the 'shelf life' (obviously unopened is about 2 years!!)
