hi, just a quick one - have been given flucloxacillin for thrush that won't go (dr says might be a bacterial infection). I've heard it's not ideal to have to have antibiotics when breastfeeding but is it just because if you take them often you become less responsive? thanks!

no some antibiotics travel through the breastmilk and can cause reactions to the baby. the stuff you are taking should be fine as i took it for Group B Strep in pregnancy.

flucloxacillin for thrush sounds bizarre. as far as i knew antiobiotics increased your chances of thrush.

It could be endomatritis (hope that is spelt right!) which is why the AB's It can look like thrush!
AB's are not generally bad I(if your dr knows you are breast feedinjg he will Not give you anything that will harm your baby),
Some (not all) AB's will change the babys gut flora give them the runs and cause some weight loss but as soon as they are stopped baby will catch up!
I had Endomatritis after DC3

I was on antibiotics (penicillin) shortly after my son was born. He's now allergic to penicillin and also a similar antibiotic family, cephalosoprins.

I was on penicillin (same reason, same time scale) after the birth of my daughter 3 years later and she has no allergy to any antibiotics.

I breastfed both children.

As there's no family history of allergies to antibiotics I sometimes wonder if that v. early exposure to penicillin might have made my son more succeptible to a penicillin allergy. This is the opinion of my father, who is a doctor, but not an allergy specialist--so I don't really take his opinion too seriously. But I do wonder.

Ds is nearly 6 months. I've had more time on antibiotics than off during his pregnancy and since. He's ok, just make sure the doc knows you are breastfeeding. I'm on a new one presently (clarithromycin) and I think he doesn't like the taste very much. This is the first time he has seemed to dislike it.

Thanks for all the replies. Sherazade - I think it's because Daktarin cream did nothing and neither did Fluconazole (sp?) so she thinks it isn't actually thrush now.

I had to take lots of doses of Flucloxacillin for mastitis while bf and dd didn't seem to mind. Your Dr. sounds pretty switched on-- mine didn't even believe in the existence of thrush!
