Advice needed on feeding a 1 month old

Hi, I am in need of some advice. I can't seem to fill up my 1 month old.

I am bottle feeding him formula. He will wake up and cry every 4 to 5 hours for food but I'm having to do 4-6 ounces a feed as the recommended amount wasn't filling him. However recently he is still wanting more. I have tried hungry baby but he got through a tub faster than the normal stuff and I had the same problem of him just wanting more.

I'm abit stuck and unsure of what to do. Many thanks in advance.

Feed him every 3 hours during the day (timed from the beginning of the last feed), and then at night only feed him when he wakes up (as in don't wake him up). That way he should get the majority of his food during the day and go longer stretches at night.

Could you try a smaller bottle more often so you aren't increasing the total amount given in 24h. I have never bottle fed but 4-5 hours seems a long time to go between meals if you're only drinking milk? Maybe it's normal for a baby on formula?

He’s eating very infrequently for such a young baby. If he ate four hourly and was exactly average weight for a one month old, you’d expect him to eat around 130mls per feed. If he’s sometimes not eating until five hours and if he’s a bigger baby than average then even expected feeds would be bigger.

If he’s coping with bigger feeds then it’s fine to feed larger volumes of standard formula when he asks for food. If he’s not coping with large volumes (vomiting etc) then I’d wake him to feed more frequently every 2-3 hours in the day.

My son would drain bottles in a continual round of 2 hour feeds in the day 3 at night.

@sandberry he was 9.6lb born and at his last weight check he was 9.9lb which was a couple of weeks ago.

He is coping well with the large volumes of formula, never vomits. I'm just abit concerned that I've got to do so much just to try and fill him.

So he’s very slightly above average weight. It’s fine to feed him as much as he wants to drink. Some babies drink a lot, some drink a little. If you want to reduce volume per feed then you can feed more often but otherwise sounds like he’s doing fine.
