Hi guys, my baby is 1 week old, I am just looking for some advice? We have been feeding every 3 hours since we left hospital but she is getting to a week old now and have tried upping her feed but anything over the 1 oz she throws up is this normal or do we need to seek further advice from midwife? Thanks in advance

How big is your baby? 8oz a day really isn’t much.
Does the sick look like milk or is it lumpy? Milky sick is normal, lumpy sick is more likely to indicate a problem (but is often also normal). Is baby putting on weight?

You need to burp after each ounce, their tummies are tiny and a burp can fill the space and bring a lot of milk up with it. If baby needs more milk but won’t tolerate a larger feed, then feed more often instead.

I think my baby took 2oz per feed at this stage but you might find she very quickly starts to take more. He was very sick for a while too. There’s all the technical things that could be going on in there but I think realistically it’s just the fact their little insides are so tiny and it’s so easy to disrupt what’s going on in there. Try to double check she isn’t take in any air or bubbles during a feed. Maybe even stop her and try burping her during it. I found that sometimes even just one air bubble in their stomach when they’re so little can cause the whole thing to come back up. It’s so frustrating as you’ve then basically cancelled out what you’ve just fed her. I think if the sick is green or a brighter shade of yellow you should always contact someone. It will end though, hang in there

How are you both getting on today @CRosse?

Hi all thanks for your replies, we have upped her feeds to around every 90 mins and is now taking a bit more and keeping it down but still not 2oz. Midwife is coming again soon so will see what she weighs then. Fingers crossed she starts taking more day by day now.
