Got my period, is my milk supply fucked?

LO is nearly 7m and is BF with some solids, I got my period back today. Obviously 7m in my supply is established and stays the same as far as I can tell. I’m concerned as I’ve seen a lot online about women getting their period back and their supply tanking. Has anyone had experience of this that can advise/reassure me?

it’s not the end of the world if I need to FF but I’d be a bit gutted if I had to stop now, after the slog at the start the feeding is so easy now, I’d be a bit gutted if I needed to start faffing with sterilising bottles at this point!

Not for me I got my period back after about 6 months and fed my baby until 18months no problems.

EggBlanket · 15/03/2023 07:43

No, your supply will be fine. I breastfed for 2 years and my period returned at about 8 months post partum.

I’ve never heard of milk supply being affected by a woman’s period returning.

Aozora13 · 15/03/2023 07:45

Didn’t happen for me, I think by 7m your supply is pretty well established? I didn’t enjoy bf around my period as it felt a bit uncomfortable but supply was fine. For me it happened the other way around - when demand reduced, my periods came back!

Twizbe · 15/03/2023 07:48

No it's fine. I got my period back at 6 weeks for my first and 10 weeks for my second. Continued to breastfeed past 1 for both.

With my eldest though, I did notice on day 1 that he'd be very fussy on the breast. He was fine after that.

toomuchlaundry · 15/03/2023 07:48

My period came back quicker than yours, about 2 months after giving birth, didn’t affect supply

wibblewobbleball · 15/03/2023 07:48

No it'll be fine!

EveSix · 15/03/2023 07:49

You'll be fine, OP. I bfed for 2 and 3 years respectively, having started periods at around 6 months with both.

DressDilemma · 15/03/2023 07:49

Got my periods back at 6 weeks after both my DCs. Went on to breastfeed them till 2.5 years each, no correlation between milk supply and periods at all.

Shmithecat2 · 15/03/2023 07:49

No, its fine. Ds was ebf. I got my period around 6mo 😠 but continued to bf ds until he was nearly 4yo.

doadeer · 15/03/2023 07:50

My period came back at 7 weeks and I exclusively breastfed till 12 months.

DNAshelicase · 15/03/2023 07:51

This is wonderfully reassuring, thank you mumsnet! Do feel slightly robbed with AF making her return, I did not miss her!

Mine came back within 8 weeks all three times. Mother Nature is a bitch 😂😂

Successfully breastfed for over a year each time though.

BritInAus · 15/03/2023 07:56

I got my period back at 4-5 months, fed until over 2.5 years.

CoedenNadoligLanOHyd · 15/03/2023 07:57

No, I had my period back at 7 months and fed until.22 months. And he was a massive chunky baby

PuttingDownRoots · 15/03/2023 07:57

Mine came back at 7 months, was pregnant at 12 months, fed to 17 months. Came back at 7months again the second time, fed for 2.5 years.

BertieBotts · 15/03/2023 07:58

Not necessarily no. I got it back at 4mo with DS2 and still fed him until 2.5yo.

Blossomandbee · 15/03/2023 08:35

Mine came back straight away and I fed successfully, I didn't notice any difference.

LunchWithAGruffalo · 15/03/2023 09:02

I did tend to notice mine would be a bit fussy the day before my period. Nothing major, but I do think it was a bit of a supply dip as it was back to an evening of cluster feeding. Probably not helped by me tending to feel a bit rough the day before anyway.

Never had it last more than a day though, and pretty much as soon as my period arrived we would be back to normal.

I've since read that calcium and magnesium supplements are supposed to help. Had stopped feeding by then though so never tried it.

TheOtherHotstepper · 15/03/2023 09:13

Mine came back at 4 weeks both times. No effect on BF at all.

MrsAvocet · 15/03/2023 09:29

I bf all my children for years and I did notice a bit of fluctuation in supply when i had my periods. Like a PP I would see a bit of a dip a day or two before my period started, but certainly nothing that required me to stop.

elevenplusdilemma · 15/03/2023 21:34

I got my period back at 5 months (DC1) and 7.5 months (DC2). Both babies were EBF until weaning at 6 months and I continued to BF them both until 14-15 months. Typically 2-3 feeds a day plus some night feeds for DC2 who was a poor sleeper. No supply issues at all. I conceived DC2 when DC1 was 12 months, so still BF.

Olaftree · 15/03/2023 21:36

DS is nearly 2 and I still haven’t had a period. I do get one week during the month where I basically have no milk, it’s frustrating! Like the period without one!
